Had a monster take down that snapped a 1062 in 1/2 before I even had a hand on it. Probably a oversize sturgeon. 2 rods in the boat all day on the hook dark to dark and that was the only bite we got. On anchor and our best of our working plugs wrapped in tuna. Water temps is still at 38 degrees down here. Were going to wait 2 more weeks and pray for 41 degrees anyhow. There was only 1 other boat out our ramp and he was a newbie trolling triangles and spinners all day on the outgoing tide
We marked somewhere around 15 or so fish today that my guess was salmon which was far better than last Friday.

They been getting any action on the beach next to you, Plugs?
I only get down by that beach when I'm trolling which was last Friday. I counted 9 rods on the beach. I' didn't see anyone get one or run for a rod while were passing by all day

Curious why you have the drag set so tight it snaps your rod in half? Obviously you have been doing this a long time. I generally have my plug rods hand tight where I can barely pull line out by have, but I have at best a 50% catch rate. Trolling herring I run a loose drag.
I applaud your efforts and will be out when steelhead season is over.
Wasn't really set all that tight. The fish that hit was more than likely a huge oversize sturgeon just ripping down river putting on such pressure in the holder couldn't get the dang folbee to pop open

Fished 7AM-5 PM solo today. Trolled Superbaits and Triangles thinking I needed to go slow as possible with the water temps still down at 38.7. 1st 2 hours on the troll with 2 different SB's and 2 Spinfish then K-Fish and tuna on the hook the rest of the day. Not much current on the outgo today. I had to make several moves till I had the wiggle on the rod the way I like. I went through 8 different plugs & Not a sniff all day fishing my best workers. Try again Friday

I'll be out in the morning for trip #8 until the weather blows me off. The report is, Cloudy in the morning with scattered thunderstorms developing later in the day. High 46F. Winds SSE at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 40%.. Don't expect a full day so didn't brine herring up today and just go with stuffer baits behind triangles dredging bottom tomorrow..

Started at 9 AM for the incoming tide to troll and there was 16 boat trailers in the parking lot. I gutted it out with 10-25 MPH winds till 2PM and by the time I got to the ramp everyone else had left. Needless to say with the boat rocking 3 & 4 feet up and down never had a fish bite all day again. That makes 8 days on the water with only 1 bite and no fish to the boat. 3 times today I took a wave over the bow trolling downhill at 1.75 mph. on the incoming. Be out doing the grind again in the morning.

Started out the day on the hook, no hits. Started trolling shortbus triangles and chartuse dyed cut plug herring around 11AM or so. finally around 2pm I just let a bait down and I actually got a bite just as kicked the kicker into gear. Hmmmmm let me rebait and think about this a second. Ok so I'm on my last herring, the water temps only 38, they may be a lil lethargic, let's try this dead slow slow slow. . 5 mph 10 mins later Bingo fish-on. I got it with 30 feet of the boat and the hooks came out. Now I'm out of herring and have to go home. I start to put everything back in it's place and I look up and the guy that had been following 1/2 the day has one on. He got it in the net. He got a beautiful 17 lb. buck.
Herring in the brine and back out in the morning armed better knowing GO SLOW

Well I stuck it out until 2:30 today out on the Columbia River. By that time the wind was so bad blowing down river against a incoming tide it was getting pretty gnarly. I got hailed on, rained on and the wind was just howling. When I took the second wave coming over my transom I had to call it a day just to unsafe to be out there. No fish worth loosing your boat or your life over. Still 38.72 degree water temps. I didn't mark but maybe 1 fish on the fish finder today. Last trip for me this week, I'll be down at the Fly Fishing Expo down in Albany, OR, If you get a chance stop in. There will be over 200 fly tyers there over the weekend demonstrating fly tying at it's finest. I'll be passing Salmon and Steelhead flies out to kids for free at the Norvise booth.

Monday morning has outgoing tide from daylight until about four thirty in the afternoon so We will be fishing on anchor with Kwik fish wrapped with tuna all day. And tomorrow's menu is

Food Green Ingredient Dish Cuisine

Nearly 30 feet of bank and 100 yrds. long along the end of the Island eroded off and filled in the spot we normally fish as our #1 best spot. Our plan is to move every 2 hours everyday till we find a sweet spot again. We have 4 spots that are well maybe, sometimes errrr once in a while but our top spot is shot filled in with sand and trees.

Report from Willow Grove is there is no report!!! No bites for me. My buddy's rod just slammed down tip in the water then came right back up wiggling away. That's the only action we had for 2 rods for 7 hours. Got back to the ramp fish checker said before us 11 boats, 16 rods no fish 1 lost. Water temps still at 39.7 down here. and oh my god you should see how many sea lions and seals at the mouth of the Cowlitz. We're going to hold off till Friday and hope to see temps up at least 3 degrees by then

How was the water color?
The water color was great but the plug bite usually doesn't happen till we see 42-43 degrees down here at least for us anyhow

Fished 7AM-5:30 PM. at 1 point there were 12 of us trolling the same 1/2 mile for most of the incoming. The only action was my buddy snagged a smelt. There were literally 100's of fur bags and birds tearing and up the water as far as you could see up and down the river it was pretty obvious we're getting another push of smelt After it flipped from incoming to outgoing we switched up to coonies and SPG for winter steelhead. At least 2 ft. of vis but still only at 40.4 degrees on the OR. side and 39.1 on the WA side below Willow grove. We did see 2 steelhead caught by the plunkers off the bar at the Willow Grove Park.

Man the lower river below longview sure had crappy crappy vis today. Don't think we saw the prop all day till it was back on the trailer . But somehow I got a takedown while we were on the hook early morning on the outgoing tide with tuna wrapped 14's. After about 11:30 we. Trolled herring dredging bottom till almost dark. Only action all day. 2 rods 12 hours fishing. That made only 1 fish lost and 2 other take downs for 11 days on the water now. The bright spot though the temps gone from 38 on Friday to 42.2 today

Well finally after 11 days on the water finally caught a dam spring chinook this morning. I always pre-wrap bait on my plugs the night before I go fishing and the Wife picks out one to fish. Well I haven't got all the way through the rotation to fish her plug until today. So today after changing plugs twice I felt guilty and put on the plug she picked out (Flame Thrower) and through it out. 30 mins went by and it looked like the tide was going to change to incoming an I was going to start trolling. I was getting my trolling rod all ready and I looked over my shoulder and the plug rod was just bent straight out the back and peeling line. I missed trying to get it in the net twice doing the 11 1/2 foot rod in 1 hand and net in the other. 3rd. time back to the boat fish rolled on it's side and in it went. Tuna wrapped K14 Flame Thrower, 5' leader, 28" dropper, 72' behind the boat, 17 ft. water, 2nd cup of coffee :)

Excellent work plugs! I agree with high desert ocean, I always say time is my best bait. My time starts tomorrow at 6:30 am. springer camp is set up french press is loaded with coffee. Boat is in her slip and hopefully tomorrow we will find a springer. Supposed to be pretty nasty so im planning to anchor out of the wind and be glad Im on vacation! Hopefully everyone has a great day tomorrow.
As dirty as the water is you'll want to anchor anyhow if your fishing the lower river
