ODFW News: Limited Wild Coho Fishery Proposed for Siltcoos and Tahkenitch lakes
NEWPORT - The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is proposing a fishery on healthy wild coho populations in Siltcoos and Tahkenitch lakes south of Florence. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries) is reviewing the fishery proposal and will accept public comment through Sept. 29.
ODFW proposed the fishery because the coho populations in these lakes are healthy and can provide harvest while continuing to be productive."
This is a terminal fishery that can target healthy populations while avoiding impacts to less productive populations," said district fish biologist Bob Buckman.
The public can view the proposal, called a Fishery Management and Evaluation Plan or FMEP, and learn how to submit comments by accessing the NOAA Fisheries Northwest Regional Office's Web site at http://www.nwr.noaa.gov/1fmep/fmepsbmt.htm.
The proposed coho fishery on the lakes could begin this fall if NOAA Fisheries approves the plan, and the regulations are enacted by ODFW. The fishery would allow one adult and one jack salmon per day per angler and five adults per year.
"There also would be a season quota for each lake that would be monitored to ensure that harvest of these coho does not exceed expectations," Buckman said. With the conservative regulation of this fishery, biologists expect these coho will stay healthy and productive, and will continue to provide harvest for the foreseeable future.
If the fishery is approved, ODFW will announce the opening, and notices will be posted around the lakes and local area with information on regulations and open areas. Information also will be available on ODFW's Web site at http://www.dfw.state.or.us/.
