So I'm getting tired of mountain house freeze dried food and I don't want too cook on my 3-4 day hunting and fishing trips. I've done peanut butter bacon and jelly sandwiches, jerky, dried fruit, bars, and trail mix. These items get old quick to. What's everyone else doing for no cook backpack food?

These are basically what I do. And yes, they get old. But who says you need hot food on these trips? I even drink cold instant coffee in the mornings. :palm:

My last trip I brought the fancy crackers, 8oz gourmet cheeses, and good quality salami. We ate like kings and the weight to calorie ratio is very good. Most of the small individually packaged cheeses will last just fine if you keep them from getting too hot, especially the harder cheeses. Salami is shelf stable. I also never get tired of Fritos, Kettle Chips, or any form of chocolate.

You always have salami type meats.
HArd cheeses
Dried fruit and rehydrate - no cooking
Granola - Nuts
Add a little powdered milj to granola or other dried fruit.
Jerky

Dried tomatoes
and other vegetables
Bullion cubes - better warm

Buy or make your own Pemmigan - great source of energy

Why not cook you first couple of meals and freeze
Not sure what top ramen taste like cold.

We did a 10 day trip - basically: jerky, cheese, granola, oatmeal and dried fruit. and Top ramen noodles. Minimal cooking.. Oh yeah peanut butter

If it is just being tired of dried foods like Mountain House. Cook it ahead of time - freeze, reheat. Love pot roast and potatoes.. There is a place on line that has freeze dried food - some with Buffalo. Think it is Hawk's Vittles

I can tell you one thing - cold food gets old fast

I 2nd the bagels. Sometimes hummus and pitas do well. In colder temps I could pack in butter and a loaf of rustic bread. For 'little cooking' options: Uncle Bens has pre-cooked 30 second microwave rice, that I could heat up quickly over a stove. 'Tasty Bites' Indian food are quick to warm up and are high in flavor (although, I wonder how much of that curry smell comes out of my pores for the next couple days?!).
Cliff bars are good.

I call these protein balls...can't think of any other good name

-3 cups oatmeal
-3 scoops vanilla protein powder
-2 tbsp honey
-1 cup peanut butter
- either chocolate chips or craisens

mix it all up and form into balls....put them into zip lock bags, good protein and carbs and tastes good. Could use different flavored protein powder, add cinnamon or vanilla for flavor also.

Friiiied chicken! You'd be the only one to ever take colonel sanders into the back country. Can you imagine the look on your hunting partners faces when you pull a bucket of chicken out of the your pack? Priceless. :twocents:

Seriously though, how good would that be if you did it? Lol

Plenty of good ideas already thrown out there in this thread.
I say just push through it. It's just temporary and part of the game to hunt. It's not like you're going to eat that way the rest of your life.
I personally think at least one hot/warm meal a day does tons for the moral, especially if you are solo or cold weather. I guess it depends on length of trip and your own personality. After being in the military, I've learned something so temporary just isn't a big deal. But, I'm one of those guys that liked "C"rats and still don't mind MREs.

I know MRE's have already been mentioned but thought I would mention that Winco lately has been carrying them disassembled. You can buy just the entree, crackers, peanut butter, cheese spread, brownie, etc all in the bulk section of the store. Lets you mix and match and create your own stuff. Haven't seen the accessory pouches though so no hot sauce or coffee/creamer. Virtually everything else from an MRE is there though.
