I recall being one of the first to spot the 420+ bull a few years back. Tons of video, and hours of just watching him frolicking with his heard. Soon, more and more people started showing up/heard about him and saw him.
I recall vividly watching guys slash tires, running in groups down canyons in the dark and getting in fist fights over this bull. (Bet you don’t see that on private). Then the 400+ bull, two years ago, that was shot off the road by an old man, same story.

Moral of the story: all the giants are not on private, but if they are, there is sure an advantage. Just face it!
I bet the guys slashing tires were from the west side of the state. Fat Snipers...🤠

I would mostly agree but with a caveat - If a bull is on public, as long as he stays in your unit you can legally pursue him wherever he goes. Elk move ALOT and unless you have a BIG patch of private ground, if they leave your stuff, you are SOL. In that regard I would say public has a huge advantage.
I think folks forget that the "books" were not created to honor the hunter as much as the animal. To keep tabs on the status and general health of animals (antler size being a measurement of health). However, we have made it a status thing instead...more about the shooter and less about the animal. Consider that, and all that needs to be said is, "Dang nice bull". If you think their should be an asterisk next to any free-range animal, I might question the size of your truck tires.

Agreed, size of parcel makes huge difference. Is it “free range” if it lives on private year round or during harvestable season(s)? Lots of different issues that the book was not intended for! Stock size wheels and tires for me bud.🤣

Not everyone that lives “west” lives within 3 miles or downtown Portland. I’ve met plenty of jackwagons that live over east to. Guys that live 50-60 miles away from the green gate we’re walking into in sled springs telling me that these are his elk because he live closer.

Im calling BS on this. Post your pics and videos….
At this point you’re just trolling. Bummer that a decent thread on a giant Oregon bull has been derailed by jealousy.

Don't feed the trolls. I know it's tempting, but don't do it.

I live about as far west as you can in this great state and I fully agree with you. :)

As for feeding trolls, they have to eat just like you and I.:devilish:

Also, back to the original post, pretty awesome bull. I have never even seen above 350" on the hoof so 50 more " would be a sight to behold.

Seems unfair you can afford trail cams and the time and money to spend 100 days in the woods most hunters cant much like owning property. I guess you better put an asterisk next to your bull🙄

I would have no issue if I shot one on private. I only hunt public now though. Took several Oregon book whitetails on private back in the day. Never entered one.

Wish people would learn to get along better.

Was there a list being kept at the time of who all had spotted this bull? What place did you finish in? And how many were on the leaderboard? Who finished first?
And 'tons of video'.............but it all just happens to be gone now, lost in a horrific event where your phone was destroyed, despite the fact most people have their phone info backed up. That is just so sad.
What is a 'heard' that this bull was frolicking with? And what exactly is elk frolicking? Not sure I've ever witnessed that. Must have been special to see.
What sort of sentence did the court hand down to the tire slashers that you witnessed? I'm sure an honest an upstanding citizen like yourself called them in immediately, right?
How do you watch groups run down canyons in the dark? Wasn't it dark? But you were able to see these groups running and getting in fist fights? Maybe you had a thermal. Or a drone. Or a drone with a thermal. Were these fights before the season when the guys on the leaderboard were all 'vividly watching' this 420 bull or was it on opening day?

Sorry for so many questions, but with such an awesome story, I just can't help but want to know all the cool little details.

No problem.

I did not have a tag, the guy who finished first was the best / most patient hunter of the group. The bull continued frolicking with his cows later in the week which is what got him killed.

My phone scope phone was an old phone with no service or backup.

Frolicking=moving about, playing with. Heard=Herd, misspelling my bad.

If you knew anything about Oregon courts you would know they do not hand down sentences for criminal mischief II. They legalized hard drugs and passed legislation to make it impossible to buy a gun. You probably voted for both those things.

If you have ever been in the mountains you would know in the early morning when its still dark you can clearly see people run down an open hillside.

It was opening weekend, when it all went down. Sorry that you are not able to comprehend simple facts.

No problem man. That stereotype that everybody that lives west of Pendleton is a **** just grinds my gears! There’s plenty of great people all over the state and plenty of ********* too.

Back to the elk. It’s awesome!!!

Should raffle tags and high-dollar auction tags have an asterisk next to them in the record books?
