There are a ton of Mackeral off of Newport, I saw several schools tonight and jigged up a dozen or so, are they good for Halibut bait? (pretty big, maybe 12"-13")

If yop can jig up some smaller macs, the'y make awesome candy bait for yellowtails, big tuna, dorado, and maybe the wayward billfish.......rig them with 2 hooks, and troll them slow (if they're live)

macs make great strip bait for just about anything!

Yes, Macs are great Hali bait:smash: chunks, strips, whole:smash: ............:clap: like those hammer down things:smash:

They make excellent halibut bait. Just about any thing works. the bloodier and oilier the better. Shad, Mackeral, Sardines, Salmon bellies and Tuna bellies have all worked well for me. Try to keep them under 10" to 12" for a single bait. If they are bigger than that you can cut off the tail or even plug cut them and they work just as well. If they are too big for that use a fillet. That works as well if not better. You don't need to be concerned with how it looks. Not much light at 600' down. Good Luck.
