Lower Clackamas, just downstream of High Rocks

I'm mostly a Sandy River bank angler and moved to Wilsonville not long ago. Now I'm tired of driving so far to fish, not to mention, gas costs. Yesterday, while walking The Clack along the greenway in downtown Gladstone, I noticed an angler float fishing on the other side. He was about 100 yards downstream of the local pedestrian bridge. The water in this area looked fairly deep and fast, much deeper than where I tend to fish at Oxbow. I kept thinking if I was going to fish this stretch, I'd want to drift fish with a heavier weight, because I'm not sure that guy's offering was getting deep enough in the water column. Nonetheless, it looks fishy enough, and I plan to fish it. Not interested, at all, in combat fishing the old bowling alley hole, or further down at Meldrum or closer to the mouth. Just this stretch I mentioned. Have any of you fished it before? Is it as deep as I tend to guess it might be...20' in places? Any comments would be appreciated including you're wasting your time. Thank you in advance.

I have fished that area a lot. I cannot think of any holes that are that deep from Cross Park to the mouth.

Are you talking about the pedestrian bridge at Cross?
YES, that pedestrian bridge! I want to fish on the Gladstone side. Or, is it better to fish the other side?

No it's prolly 6- 8 ft at the spot your thinking, Oregon city side of river. When the water lowers there's some boulders on the bank. Wade out and pitch spinners ,drift or bobber fish. Fish hold out in the gravel bar in the fast current. Best of luck. That spot is no secret, it gets plenty pressure. You have to hike below and out beyond the back eddy.

The location the OP described is what locals "BACK IN MY DAY" referred to as Monkey Rocks. Don't ask me why....I truly do not know, But yes downriver to the old 82nd high rocks bridge there is an outcropping of bedrock jutting out from shore approx 30 yds. Iv'e tried fishing there al long time ago after witnessing a few Steelhead caught. All I can say is that I never hooked anything except for Rocks that stole my gear, it is in fact deep, and I was attempting to deploy drift fishing techniques where in after thought possibly the location would be acceptable for a Spoon or Steelie.

Thank you. Ten years ago, I also fished that outcropping of bedrock, but noticed anglers I took to be locals fishing a little further upstream, and on the city side, where the river narrows the most. Wondered if I was on the wrong side of the river. After a couple more fishless days, I gave up and headed back to the Sandy.

Might be worth checking out during Spring Chinook season. Back when Clack was receiving huge returns, I think Terry Seamster caught his big Spring Chinook from High Rocks back in late 1980’s??? Also think it was around 52#?

As I recall, that 50+# Springer came from under the Gladstone Hwy 99 bridge. I used to fish that "Monkey Rock" for springers. When the water was fairly low.

Yes ppl fish there. I drive by there almost 3 or 4 times a week and recently there's always someone fishing there. I personally have caught fish there....when the spots and the bar is dead for few days. Not recently. You can come here and get the idea but do as your head/heart tells you. I'll say fish it. Good luck.

Thanks. Are you talking about fishing along the greenway, more urban, side of the river where everyone is walking?

Yes there's fish, carfull fishing above the bridge on the OC side, large boulders eat gear. The channel runs from north to south under the bridge and stays deeper on the south OC side all the way to the tailout 150 yards. I start my drifting on the gladstone north shore side, fish in close 1st. With some drifting skill you can cover alot of water standing on the rocks. I'm assuming your fishing fall and winter flows. The best I've done in the summer is throwing a chain from the south side from the rock out cropping. I was able to snag and retrieve the mattress box spring that was a gear killer. Walking the trail above the I 205 and train bridge north side is worth your time, it opens up to a fishy spot to.
