I'm finally ready to upgrade to a bigger boat. I am looking at used 20' Asaltor on a galvenized trailer. The boat looks to be in decent shape, but has seen salt a few times every year (owner claims he always flushed the engines afterwards). Is there anything in particular I should be looking for in terms of damage/corrosion? Any tell-tale signs (for the hull, motor, or trailer)? Do I need to get a 3rd party to look it over? If so any recommendations?

BTW, I am already a boat owner but I bought my current boat new.

Also, while I'm soliciting opinions - is a 130hp Yami (2str) enough motor for this boat?

You can spend a lot of money on surveys. I always have said " if it looks, sounds and feels right, buy it."

I agree with Sore Back. I bought my 2001 Weldcraft Renegade w/ 24 hours on it, 9.9 kicker, and loads of other stuff for $18,000!! It looked good, ran good, and was a steal I believe. That's about all it took to convince me. The original owner put it in salt twice, but cleaned it out immediately, so to me this wasn't a problem, visually or mechanically.

For the right price, buy it!!

Try removing the prop. Easy or difficult? Just a clue and my $.02.......

If it's a prop, 130 is plenty. That's a nice boat and unlikely to have much, if any damage or wear from just a few times a year in the salt. Tom Sperb at Tom's outboard in Milwaukie is a Yamaha specialist and very thorough.

Thanks for the input everyone. I think I'm just going to test drive it and make sure it slides into the garage - if both of these check out then I'll pull the trigger. I've looked it over a couple of times real good and other than a few salmon blood stains it looks to be extremely clean.

Will post a pic once I get possesion.
