Thanks again for not taking that the wrong way. Heard of them over 14, just never seen one. I have talked with some old guys that used to dive at the Grand Coulee Dam and they said they had seen big ones that would scare the @##@$ out of ya. I always enjoy talking to those old guys talking about the mule getting drug out into the river etc... Man if we could have just lived back then!

very true, some of the storys my grandfather used to tell me were great,, he used to fish for them in the 40s and 50s,, before any real size limits,, out of a 13 foot wood boat with a 5hp motor,, woundnt that be fun,, they were nuts, but thats all they had, so what can ya do,,

Official records for the state of Oregon.

And you are correct. There is not a record for sturgeon because of the size restriction. But, I believe, around the turn of the last century, the largest ever taken was around 1500 to 1800 pounds and had to be drug on shore my a team of mules. And I think there might be pictures on this board somewhere. :)
I know that when I was a young buck 30 yrs ago they had a pic of a sturgeon like you are refering to pulled from the willamette with a team of horses on the wall at the top of the oregon city elevator.

I wonder if anyone has ever tried to get video of these monsters that the divers talk about?
I mean, these divers know that sturgeon get big, but a 12ft sturgeon (my personal best) doesn't look very threating, like it could eat you. It seems that a majority of dive inspectors get very freaked out and hang up thier fins after diving at the dams of the columbia. I believe those divers are telling the truth about sturgeon with a head the size of a car, because really, what else would make them quite? Only a sturgeon that big would give the impression that your going to be his next meal.

I did have one sturgeon (or monster) that I set the hook on, and it just felt like the bottom. After a couple of minutes of trying to break off, I felt a very slow, but powerfull swimming action, and then it just took off. I put my penn 340's drag to the absolute limit, and even did my best to thumb the 100lb braid from coming off; but it spooled me in a matter of minutes. I Lost all my line...

After fighting alot of big fish, not one of them could compare to what I hooked that day.

that is a great question. I think everyone has heard the "urban legend" of a diver on a ------ dam that saw a fish so big he just walked off the job! when I was in california I heard stories like this and up here I have heard the same stories.

is there such a video??? just think If there was a guy that saw a true fish like that wouldn't someone video them??? strgrule do you have any videos of giant sturgeon at the dams??

for the record I firmly believe that they are around well over 20 feet no doubt in my mind but a fish with a head like V.W would be the size of a bus???? 20+ feet no question many in the columbia basin..

I fish and just "boat around" The Dalles dam, during the shad run I have seen the big guys come to the surface and eat floaters (dead shad) one came up next to my boat and seemed to be the same length. I have a 21 footer.....
I always thought that Sturgeon surface or jump out of the water to take in a gulp of air for an air sac they have in there bodies? Have seen and heard some bigs one jump. They were giants.

Not calling anyone a liar because monstrously large fish are landed all the time. But I would venture to guess that most stories of 11' plus fish are exagerated. This isn't to say the anglers purposely lied, lets face it, an 11' fish looks and fights like it's 20 feet!!!

Here is a length/weight conversion chart for white sturgeon on the Fraser River, BC.

http://www.fishtours.com/weightchart.htm

As you can see from the chart, a 13.9' (167 inches) sturgeon weighs in at a whopping 1,506 pounds! You will note too that once this large they gain about 25 pounds per inch of additional length. Assuming they continue to gain about 25 pounds per inch a 17' fish would weigh around 2400 pounds. Now imagine being attached to 2400 pounds with rod and reel and then add in the river current, good luck landing this fish.

Well, I measured it buy marks on the cement, and true, we (4 guys) eyed it but we took away a few inches since the fish was so big. I layed my rod down twice, and it measured 1 3/4 lengths, and seeing that I was using a 8 ft rod, we figured a little over 14 feet. A little meaning the rod was a 8 ft 6 in rod. So I just say 14 ft.

the u.s. record for sturgeon is 19 feet caught in san fran bay. i watched national geographic a couple days ago and they had a show called "whopper fish". took him 6 hours to fight a 19 foot fish....6 HOURS!!!!!

The largest I heard that came from the Snake river was 19ft back in the early 20s. I would not be surprised if a couple 20fters lurk the columbia system.

The largest sturgeon ever caught was 28ft, and it was in Russia's Volga river. Throughout the history on that river, there were reports of bigger ones caught.

I watched a program a while back about Ireland, and there are scientists that speculate the loch ness monster is really a sturgeon. I saw one breach in oc a few years ago and it was HUGE. Its mouth was the size of a tire. After seeing that, I have no doubt that loch ness folklore could very easily have started with a sturgeon sighting.

The book "Sturgeon Fishing" by Larry Leonard has some impressive pics of gators, including a 1500 pounder from the 1800s.

This Sturgeon was caught on the Willamette River
just below Oregon City.

It weighed out at over 1,000 lbs and measured out at 11'1". It was 56" around the girth and took over 6 and a half hours and 4 dozen beers for the 4 guys taking turns reeling.
