I'm going to the John day this weekend to fish with my son for smallies. Can the three hour drift above the Priest hole be made safely with a canoe? Any recommendations for lures or techniques to use. Haven't fished for smallmouths in over 35 years and that was in PA. I need help!I've already posted on the bass and panfish board, but I'm trying for more exposure.

I like to use small Rat-L-Traps, grubs and grub spinners to find them. Once I find a concentration of fish, I like to switch to a fairly large crawdad plastic or tube jig fished on the bottom to try for larger fish. As far as the drift goes, are you talking about putting in at Twickenham and taking out at Priest hole? haven't drifted that stretch so don't know if there's anything dangerous in there. Let me know how it goes, I'm gonna try that drift myself this year.
