I tried to tell my daughter that all season, she says "Im not shooting a forky" Its all about braggin rights for her. I sure as heck wont pass one up, even on opening weekend, they are the best eating anyways. congrats on your buck, this is my last chance for one so I gotta go.

I will shoot the first legal animal i see that is fork or bigger. I think spikes should be given the chance to grow and learn a little so they are not so stupid... To many times i see a spike just standing there after he sees you... Not fair to the deer. But i will shoot a fork...

I'd sure like to see our western buck deer limit include spikes. I can't imagine the logic for not including them in the limit for buck deer... Is it the concern for a doe being shot due to an imagined spike.

I hope that isn't the reason.

That's exactly the reason. It was interesting to see ODF&W propose to allow spikes in the bag earlier this year. I dug through some printed material from years past and ODF&W staff actively opposed having spikes in the harvest due to the incidental harvest of Does.

Its a real issue here on the Westside. Thick cover, dark rainy days.

I would rather eat a fork that a four point any day.

Got to say it is exciting when you have a four point in your sights but it's no where near as good on the table.

I say to each his own, hunt for what you want.

I've got a box of Sporks and Forks that I callmy box of shame, but in all honesty I'm proud of every one of those little bucks. When you don't have all month to hunt and you are working or in school you have to take what the good Lord gives you. I've shot my fair share of nice ones, but the little ones defintely are the majority. I' cherish every one as they are a booner. Good job and have fun. Kris. :smash:

When I am hunting, I shoot the very first legal animal that I see. The little ones taste great (as do all the big ones I have got too), and I still get really excited when I pull up on a fork, and that's what it's all about. Cody

Yeah, you're right. The bigs ones still taste fine they are just somewhat tougher.

i like the challange of finding a mature buck, i would rather go home empty handed and leave a baby deer in a place where it could grow to be a trophy, than to take and eat it

I'm first and foremost a meat hunter. I've got some nice racks on my walls but I've never passed up a legal deer to wait for something bigger.

I've known some characters that were dyed in the wool horn hunters. They'd hunt for a nice rack and the attention they gave the meat was a disgrace. I new one fella that even let a nice 4 point rot hanging in his garage. Said he just didn't have time to get to it and the weather got warm. SOB had time to take the head and get it mounted. Still makes me mad!

Next season he's out hunting for horns again. Has trophy mounts all over his place. Maybe he thinks that is impressive but all it impressed on me was what a jerk he is.

I've no problem with horn hunters as long as they properly take care of and honor the meat.

Thats the take my family has taught me as well as the other up coming hunters. Meat is meat whether its a spork or a trophy, nothing gets wasted.

I am not a horn hunter. I would shoot a doe before i shot a spike, if it was legal.
I refuse to shoot a deer that is 1 year old.
I will even pass up a small fork, it is not because it has a small rack it is due to the fact that it might be a 1 year old fork.
Just my opinion, nobody will change it.

So how do you tell how old a doe is before you shoot it?

I won't shoot a fork on opening day because that means that I have to quit hunting. I love the challenge that hunting provides and that is why I hunt with a bow. I will shoot any legal buck on the last day just to get some meat, but I like big old bucks because they are smart, and I feel more of an accomplishmet after I have outwitted a beast.

OK throwing my 2 cents over the river,....here in WA most areas are visable antler,I never even consider'd the incedental doe kill I mean visable means visable don't it.Any how I too am purely a meat hunter,and have harvested my share of spikes,but I would realy like to see western WA go to a branch antler restriction,just too hard to pass a legal buck up sometimes.I know it's all about self controll,but when all you are seeing are spikes and the freezer is empty,well young and tender is tasty :shrug:,but it would be nice to see a few more mature bucks.

i am a forky killer and proud of it.

i hunt to put meat on the table not for bragging rights

my Grand dad, dad and uncle siad to me one day when i killed my first deer

the hunt and the kill and the trophy is in the eyes of the shooter let them enjoy what they have done
