The new issue of STS Magazine has an excellent article about acid washing and cleaning aluminum boats and how to successfully apply Sharkhide. As soon as I finish typing this I'm headed outdoors to put on the second coat before the rains start again for another week.

Thanks. I was a little concerned I would screw it up on my newer Predator last year so I hired It out. Ez Way metal polish. So far so good on mine. Salt use to. I even got set into the Pucker brush and rubbed hard at the boat launch at the mouth of Kalama and it didn't rub off. I haven't read the article yet on how the apply it but the Pros sprayed mine on. The article is now available in the May issue of STS. Follow the directions and it will work out well for you. Check out the part about putting some of the acid wash on the bottom of the boat just to see how much brighter a BRAND NEW boat looks. Unbelievable. Bob at EZ Way gave me some tips on how to put clear coat on my new sled yesterday and I'll get 'er done with this current good weather. They do marvelous work on all metal surfaces and fiberglass too. They are BUSY so book your job early!

I had ez way do my other boat and I applied it to my new boat. I reapply every spring about 2-3 coats. It really helps reduce the scum build up and makes it much easier to wash off (I wash it about 4-5 times per year) - and my boat is moored in fresh water year round. Cooler temps help slow the curing time helping for an even application & finish. I wouldn't do it on a hot July afternoon. I apply per instructions on the can with horizontal swipes with a clean cotton rag.

I use Turtle paste wax on the painted surfaces and outboard motors.

Lot's of work.

I disagree. After washing boat the Shark Hide application took maybe 1.5-2 hours on my 20' boat. Smooth even strokes with a rag, that's it. Good lighting helps.

It will not be as shiny as a buffed waxed hull, but the protection lasts longer, is more effective, much easier to apply and more durable.

I pulled the boat yesterday out of the marina for the first time in 6-7 months for a post springer season cleaning. The worst algae growth is within 20" of the waterline where the sunlight reaches.
It is important to wash the boat within 30 minutes of pulling it from the water while the scum is still soft and not dried on. With a broken pressure washer, I am reduced to using soapy water and a 3M scrubby backed sponge.

One pic shows where a few seconds scrubbing easily removed the worst growth from the stern. The lower unit on the big Yamaha was disgustingly thick with green slime. Thanks to last year's application of paste wax on the motor and the annual Shark Hide treatment, I washed and cleaned and had the whole outside hull and top clean and gleaming in under 2 hours. I'll wax the paint and motors and apply some more Shark Hide today or tomorrow.
