Heat Map Feature on Sonar/Plotter

For those that use this...its not a bad feature when finding temperature breaks for Tuna (as an example).

Basically, it color codes your trail relative to temperature. Obviously, redder is hotter...green is cooler. You can change the color palette if needed.

Navico products have this (Simrad, B&G & Lowrance) . I believe Furuno has this feature too.

The nice thing about this is that if you run out and you want to come back in closer to where the temp break was...you have a visual representation of that on your chart (if you enable this) and then you can head back to that spot with pin point accuracy. Just click on the spot where the color change was and create a waypoint or navigate to that spot.

What is on my to-do list is to have a dedicated fast response temp sensor hooked up to my N2K network.

The transducers do have temp sensors. But when I test the sensors with a bucket of ice water...I find that the response time is a little slower than I like. In fact, I see in some cases with a rapid change in water temperature --- it can take several minutes to show that temperature change.

Both Garmin and Lowrance build external sensors for this.

On my to-do list for winter, I will probably add one of these to the stern where I have a piece of starboard as a mounting plate (for isolation) for dedicated water temp that has a fast response time. This model is based on the T80 but it has the built-in analog to digital (N2K) interface built-in (that is the little black rectangular inline box you see in the picture).

This is a little more low-profile compared to the thru-hull designs. Plus, since I also mounted a piece of starboard on my ducer bracket as an isolated, I get the added benefit that the hull temperature does not affect my temperature read out with this type of surface mount sensor.

Anyone else using this feature of their chart plotters?

Yup Furuno has it also and I do use it. I'm getting the temp that's built into the thru-hull transducer (275LHW) which seem ok but maybe not as good as stand alone....not sure.

Speaking of water temps et cetera I subscribed a month ago to the Sirius/XM Fish Mapping service. To me, at least on my Furuno gear the graphics could be better. It doesn't approach the SatFish app that I like to use at home. In the past I've used Terrifin & Rip Charts but like SatFish the best. One thing the Fish Mapping service has that SatFIsh doesn't is sub 30m water temp....however that's measured. All of it is in the 50's at that depth according to the service. I haven't had the service long enough or been out enough to see if there is any help with the -30m temps for planning and or search. It'd be interesting if any folks have been looking at it.

We used the water temperature graphing feature on my Garmin system for the first time Saturday. Set it up as a side bar on my sonar screen. It was pretty useful for tracking temp breaks, and especially seeing how significant they were.

I have an old 7612xsv, I have temp fed by one of my ducers, but haven't figured out how to do a temp/track combo or overlay like that. Is it a specific module, specific to your mfd, or specific to software? Thanks in advance, I've been clamoring for this feature for years, and this is the first that somebody has pointed it out as existing. . .seems like an easy bit of code to write, thanks,

If it is a touch screen unit, I think it should be similar. I run multiple 943XSV's (I like redundancy), and the graph function is one of the few things I have found w/ the Garmin operating system. On mine, we had to create a new combo page and add a graph to it, then picked temperature, then picked my Airmar as the source (I think).

Here's the Garmin page on it: GPSMAP Owner's Manual Owner's Manual - Viewing Graphs
