45 mm to the hook eye... barbless Gami 4/0 OctoCircleNice rigging. How far is the hang back and what size hook?
Is this number just set in your head? Lol...like I have 1 inch set in my head for hook distance from plastic. I like it best when the hook is right there by plastic at the narrow end...less got away...but the plastic gets destroyed...which I dont mind..but gave an inch a try with 3/0 eagle claw razor sharp needle point (chrome) and something about it...if you don't jump on rod right away, the way it hooks is through the end of mandibular bone..text book...works for me.45 mm to the hook eye... barbless Gami 4/0 OctoCircle
Can't help myself... microsurgical precision is woven into the fabric of my being. Besides, OrAngler is a man of exacting detail... he deserved a PRECISE answer. Is this number just set in your head?
Sorry the 'precision' 45 mm prompted my response. All good. [emoji3]

Simple reason...stick with what works for ya best [emoji3]GEE... ya don't say?
Been preaching about the virtues of the solid, NON-mortal hookups produced by hangback rigging for nearly TWO decades now. Made lotsa converts along the way, but why more folks don't rig that way is beyond me.
Seismic shift indeed!Started the B-10 season with the trusty hangback circles, but got into a "good" bite at the #1 wingdam by Ilwaco that had the crew in a bad funk. I say "good" loosely because most were rattly $h!tter bites that just would NOT stick ( prob dinker coho or jack kings). Even resorted to TRIPLE J-hook rigs... THE HORROR... but even after the change, the three-hook rigs honestly weren't any better at sticking those fish. Regardless, the foam roll of hangback circle bait leaders got stashed that day to prevent a mutiny, and never came back out til later in my local troll fishery. By then I was just too haphazard about keeping track.... plus I made a seismic shift in technique that still needs a serious hangback re-working.![]()
I used this exact setup yesterday in the Columbia and went 2for2. What really sold me was the possibility of the fish staying hooked while running barbless. I usually have less experienced people fish with me and they don't always apply adequate pressure. We were 5 for about 20 last year. So, I'm already ahead. And less mortality on non keepers is a win for sure. So thanks!Latest HANGBACK circle application… View attachment 989391

A well-placed hangback BARBLESS circle will run circles around a barbed J-hook all day EVERY day.... TROOF!What really sold me was the possibility of the fish staying hooked while running barbless.
You have sung the praises of hangbacks and have shown us pics to prove it. It's hard to dispute rigging that works for ya and rigging what the rest of us do is also because "it" works as well. Truthfully,GEE... ya don't say?

Simple Surgeons Loop… stack your adornments above the knot. Loop the hook on.You have sung the praises of hangbacks and have shown us pics to prove it. It's hard to dispute rigging that works for ya and rigging what the rest of us do is also because "it" works as well. Truthfully,
I have been skeptical of the hangback because of the configuration of the hook. It puzzles me how a point inside the gap hooks fish. That aside... I have decided to give that hangback rig a whirl for the reason of less mortality. As for the skirts, shrimps, spinner blades etc, those are the "catchy" parts that entice the fish to bite. The hook is the attachment I'm interested in discussing here.
So I have questions for ya........ Is that a noosh knot you use? Any particular reasoning? Would a solid tie egg loop do the same or is there something about the noosh tie up that "sets" the hook? Obviously how your main line goes through the eye of the hook is important to how that hook works. Also... I do double solid ties, offset points and also a bend outward to offset the hook from the shank. You seem to be happy with one hook. Any further elaboration would be appreciated, like hook size, manufacturer........... Thanks in advance.
