Made a trip out to Fort Egbert in Eagle, AK last week. Put together a slide show I thought I would share:
Eagle is a town of about 180 people on the bank of the Yukon river. Fort Egbert was constructed in 1899. We all learned about the Klondike gold rush in school - Skagway, the Golden Staircase, Call of the Wild, Dawson City, RCMP, etc. but what a lot of folks don't realize is that for people who had the means, coming up the Yukon provided better/easier access to the gold fields. Fort Egbert was established to provide stability to a lawless area until civil authorities could be established. Really fascinating history. I've attached a couple of .pdf's with more history on the place for those interested.
Some notable people to serve at the fort include William (Billy) Mitchell, famous pioneering aviator of WW1.
