Q: where to get quality 1/2 totes for a decent price. Also which is better flat bottom or fork lift legs?

I'm getting to the last items we need to purchase to get our fishing team set up for the summer and many more to come. Right now I have to plan the fish storage on 'Surprise'. My first choice is always built, insulated fishbox under deck and out of the way. Every square foot matters when you have a limited dance floor. This setup keeps the center of gravity low and the fish do well in the pit of doom.

'Surprise' has no accessible underdeck space since this is all chambered flotation. SO we went to on deck storage. I have some fishbags already and they are nice. I'm thinking they will work fine for most days ... rockfish, a few salmon or other things caught near shore. We will just fill one with ice and pack the other one with ice and fish as we go. For crustaceans we have a livewell design and I will be building one for this boat pretty soon. Basically this is a white 55 gal food grade barrel cut in half and made into a live tank. We did this for years on Kismet and the crabs love it right up to their hot tub encounter. Shrimp purge quickly in that tank and you can actually watch the water turn brown and then clear up as they clean themselves out. Same tank works reasonably well with an 1100gpm bait pump to keep a few scoops of chovies going.

So now i am thinking about the fishing safari days. Long trips out for pelagic fish or even overnight on the spot. We also like Vancouver island and those can turn into multiple day trips if you have fuel to do that. I think that will be a 1/2 tote on deck. We have 4500# reserve bouyancy and so weight will not be a limit. We have a grey full tote made by 'Bonar'. I store ice machine output in that for tuna when we load up at the house.

I have seen the green 1/2 totes on many boats but have no idea where to get one. Not even sure who makes them. 'Surprise' will have some recessed 'X' cargo tie down points welded into the deck. I need a 1/2 tote to properly locate them forward of the house and on the dance floor. Not sure how many we will actually take out. I'm told this boat will run two, one forward of the house and one on deck.

Anyone have any info on totes>?

Han,
I have a corporate account through Seattle Marine and can get any insulated you would like at just above wholesale (33% below retail average). In fact I can order for a bunch of Salty’s to save on shipping. If your interested I can call my sales guy and get prices. A friend of FO Jon is a friend of mine.

Love the SMAK 1/2 tote with forklift bottom. Having the extra height is nice for fish cleaning, which is handy since they have the replaceable cutting board on the lid. Plus, the forklift options let’s folks slide toes under the tote. Also means it’s easy to spray under it without blood and guts getting stuck between the tote and your deck. Lastly, they have threaded drains with another female threaded fitting for the plug to screw into while draining. You will want to be able to drain it easily and not lose the plug.

I have 2 of the green half-totes, I think they are made by Bonar, but not certain of the brand. I've very happy with both of them and they are not cheap. I got the first one when I outfitted the boat and it's seen a lot of use, mostly for tuna and halibut. Those both live on the boat year-round as does a 150 qt Igloo that is about worn out, but it makes a good day fish box for bottomfish and salmon and it is full of ice when we go for tuna. You'll find a half-tote makes an excellent slush tankard it'll hold 12 to 18 albacore depending on their size. We usually can get at least 15 in the half-tote slush tank, a dozen or so before we start transferring them to the front tote. I
ve heard good things about the SMAK half-totes, but I know from personal experience that the half-totes I have will hold ice for at least 4 days even in summer heat.

I think Surprise has seating for your crew in the PH, Silverfish doesn't. So we use the 150 as a seat and it's up against the half-tote which serves as a backrest at times, albeit an uncomfortable one. That half-tote is a few inches higher than the one in the front. Since my PH doesn't have a door in the back, the half-tote sits right up against the back of the PH. I had a handhold put on the top of the PH and with the radar off, the back half-tote makes a good platform for looking for birds, bait, etc.

I know lots of guys really like their kill bags, I prefer the half-totes and coolers. When we go for tuna, we have the back half-tote at least half full of ice and it gets transformed into a slush tank. The front half-tote will have about 8 to 12 inches of ice in it and that's the first place fish will go when they are removed from the slush tank. Then we have the 150 full of ice in the back and if we expect a good day, then we'll have at least two more coolers in the bow full of ice, usually 2 70 qt coolers or a 100 and a 70. The ice from the bow coolers get used in the front tote and sometimes used to add ice to the slush tank. When we have a good day, the boat is heavy on the return trip! But the fish is very well iced and usually stays where it is till we cark it the next day.

We put a bleed can, a plastic garbage can, on the offshore bracket. You may want a couple of tie downs back there for that purpose. Also a grab handle on each side of the stern for the eventuality you never want to happen - someone in the water that needs to get back in the boat. That grab handle is sometimes useful for climbing in the boat when it's on the trailer or for holding on to if you're on a ladder.

When the front tote is packed full of tuna and ice, that's enough weight in the bow for my boat. The tote in the front of my boat is right against the PH and I wouldn't want it any farther forward than that. I built a wooden platform (level with the raised front deck) on which it sits and we store tackle boxes and buckets under that platform.

I had Raider weld in tie-downs for a half tote when I had my boat built. I like having a place to sit and with a rear steering station it helps a lot. It also helps when trolling. Several people can sit on the top. I built a removable cutting/rigging board with an overboard drain so I keep the top of the half tote clean. Works very well

Ron for sharing your experience. All good things. I know very few that operate this style of boat. We will make fewer mistakes with guys like you giving us a heads up.

We got Ed's boat builder discount at Englund's for 6 months. So far this has helped us out with the steering system, pot hauler and some paint. The % varies from 0 to 25% depending on the item. BTW we are at the gated community right across the highway from where I last saw you storing your Silverfish.

JettyJunkie see what your price is for the 1/2 tote from Seattle Marine. We are quickly expending our remaining budget on the odds and ends left to buy. Any help would go a long way. I would gladly join a group buy.

I dig these SMAKs from Englund. Might be able to source them cheaper. I'm still running two big 120 igloos, but when the time is right....

If you're going way hardcore I love these double doored units... Doesn't your boat have a big beam?

my tuna plan looks similar 1/2 tote in back, bleed in can on transom, 66ā€ Reliable kill bag in nose and a 150 qt. Tote becomes slush tank. i do have alu fish box in transom, bleed salmon there. i love your shrimp livewell idea, think i will implement that in San Juans this May.

We bought into a group buy on these. Great cooler and can be used for many things.
I am sure your boat is all fixed up since this thread was 2 years old.

yikes I totally missed that Han/John started the thread 2 years ago! Ha, and I'm usually one of the guys who bitches (in a joking way) when people resurrect old threads.
