Elkhorn mountains rocky mountain goat hunt

Could she have been they were in it together and only one of them got a tag? Our group may have only gotten 1 tag but we may say we drew a tag for this unit? You may have been taking her too literally. But Maybe they both really did draw tags! o_O

So.....if you want to have a chance at a "party" you could log on at 3 am and do your apps very close to each other and this can happen???? Never given it any thought before.

This theory changes the odds PNW Sasquatch posted quite a bit. Still astronomical odds!

Well I was about 16,000 off the seed so I will figure out what time I did my app and see if they know or would share when they did. This would confirm that the app #'s are sequential and not random. The odds of two random people both applying in the same home for the same goat tag and drawing are so stupidly astronomical that it points to something other than blind luck, especially with the history of all the first time people applying and getting chosen.

My husband has been applying since a teenager and is now 75. He applied around 10pm and I have been applying for 25 years and applied around 10 am the next day.

There are a lot of goats in the Elkhorns, you should have no problem finding them.

We have hunted the Elkhorns for years and have seen a lot of goats. While elk and deer can be a real challenge up there, Goats don't seem to have a fear of humans. I have had a staring contest with a goat from 5 yards away(the goat won) also had one steal my shirt that I set down when I was fishing one of the lakes.

The terrain is some of the most beautiful in Oregon, weather in early October is usually pretty darn good. Later in the month it is hit and miss. Never had much of an issue with fog.

There is some easier trail access to prime goat territory to make it a lot easier(Elkhorn crest trail, Twin Lakes trail). Check out this link to see what the terrain looks like and also how the goats are not bothered by humans.


Once you leave the trail that's when it can become a difficult hunt.

For one person to draw the odds are 0.07646% or 1 in 1307. The odds of both drawing is an astronomical 0.000058% or 1 in 1,710,573. You would be remiss if you didn't run out and buy a lottery ticket.

Guessing we used up our luck on the goat tags as our lottery tickets were duds, lol

Drive to Marble Point from the Baker City side (which gets you up on top) and walk the crest trail past twin lakes to get to the billies. Prior to twin lakes you will probably see mainly nannies but keep heading west and the basin past twin lakes usually has groups of billies. When my hunting partner had the tag there was a mandatory talk from ODFW that we couldn't tell if they were intentionally trying to mislead us or did not have a clue where the goats were, so listen to ODFW at your own peril.

Wow - Congrats. It is a good hunt. Your odds of both getting it were about 1 in 1,000,000. To put that in perspective if you have ever been to a duck game and they give away to 1 seat holder a prize, those odds are 1 in 50,000.
