I finally got out to fish my new Edge black widow BWC STR 905-2
spiral wrapped rod. I gotta say,it's the nicest rod I think I have ever fished.

I love the graphite handle. This rod is SENSITIVE. Lightweight, responsive, plenty of back bone. I wasn't sure about the spiral wrap at first. I figured it would take some getting used to. Well, the fact that it casts like a dream,is more sensitive due to the direct contact from the line to the terminal gear, and no rod torque when fighting a fish, this rod far exceeded my expectations. I now own 3 edge rods,a First Strike 11'3" float rod,and a backup 9' 8-17.

Yes they cost a lot of dough, but I have always said you get what you pay for. These blanks Gary is making come alive in your hands. I will go ahead and say it,best rods on the market IMO.

fishnews, what I really dig about the spiral wrap is the direct line to the fish when fighting one. It is amazing to me how much the rod wants to torque left or right when the guides are all on the top of the rod,not to mention the excessive use of guides in order to keep the line to the blank contour under load. Less guides, less weight. The rod just functions better. I noticed mo difference when casting,it feels natural to me,and having that direct line to the water equals more sensitivity.

I have always been a cork guy. I have changed my tune. Graphite handles are the shiznick! PLus I have always been a fan of Gary Loomis. I respect him,and who know how much longer we get to have his input into fishing rod design. All of these are major plus signs in my mind as to what rods I will be fishing for steelhead . I fished my new Lamiglas infinity ysterday and wished it was spiral wrapped. Thus continues my addiction to fishing and buying gear that I don't necessarily need, but I like using the best.

If you want a spiral wrapped Lami just rotate the tip section 180 and give it a try, the spiral wrap guide/s only keep the line off the blank, strictly cosmetic, but in the scheme of things the performance will be identical with the guides there or not.

Before it gets zapped here’s my take. Very nice but spendy. They are light and they feel great in your hand but I haven’t fished mine yet. My 10.5 herring rods feel like Steelhead Rods. I will review them after I fish em.

There is no need to zap this thread. Discussing products and services is just fine. Only posting contact info is disallowed. We do zap stuff like links and phone numbers, but not the whole post or thread. Good info here. It's nice to have Gary back in the game, genius...

I have not owned an Edge, I have owned a couple rods built on NFC blanks, they are sports car for sure. the 2 I had just didn't hold up for me. i'm pretty bad at taking care of rods. leave leads on in transit, rods in the bed of my pickup, lots of brush, occasional fall ;)

I think if you have what it takes to take care of the rod, and not score or bruise the blank, they are amazing rods. if you're like me, classic IMX is better. I really loved how my 2 handled fish, the action of those rods are on point for their intended purpose, they are a very fine tool for sure.

Derrick454, you are going to love those herring rods, one of my NFC blanks was one of them, and they do feel like a steelhead rod in the hand. beautiful action as well when a bite starts to unfold, they are amazing..... I wish I would have not turned mine into a 6 piece travel rod though ;)

I think i'm better at testing durability of rods than you;)

trust me, you take care of your rods compared to me. I have a few IMX rods that have traveled thousands of miles of gravel in the bed of my pickup, i'm good at seeing what can take a beating, and what can't. both of my NFC blanks lasted around a year each, and I have some old classic IMX's.

I do think the NFC blanks are a little lighter, and livelier, but it comes with a cost (money and durability) I have a friend who saw mine and ordered one, and went through 2 blanks in 2 years (not good blanks for coast fall chinook bobber fishing)

i'm not saying IMX are better, because I don't think that's true, I was just adding to discussion with some real world testing I have done, they aren't for me.

good habit to be in:) i'm careful with rods for awhile, but my go to rods don't get the treatment they deserve.

I saw you mention the reel seat, I just got a Lami SI casting rod, and the reel seat is amazing, fits the hand so naturally and very comfortable, are the edge rods similar in design as far as reel seats?

I'm in the market for one more casting rod, and i'm not taking edge out of the equation yet, may just get another SI as well.

really want to handle the newest series from Cousins as well before buying.

Any takes? Or fish hooked or landed? Not even half of a review if all has been done is cast, watch a float, or tick bottom.

"what I really dig about the spiral wrap is the direct line to the fish when fighting one".

I touched on this ,but I will touch on it further. I have a standard wrapped edge rod that I used throwing spoons on the russian river. I could feel the "thump thump" of the spoon that was more pronounced than I was used to . I thought I was ticking bottom at first, but it was the spoon.

I got a take from a smallish steelhead on that rod and it was a hard strike so I can't speak much to that.

AS for the spiral wrapped rod. I walked up to a slot below this cliff in a long run, made a cast, first cast with the rod ever, and I was about 10 feet in to my drift, when I got a good bite, drifting bait. I set up into a decent fish, and what I noticed right away was how much feel I had with this rod when fighting him. With the spiral wrap the rod didn't want to pull to one side or the other. I never realized how much more effort it takes to fight a fish on a standard wrapped rod. Pretty sweet. Landed a 14 pound buck. And yes I took a picture and no I won't post it on the internet lol.

I ended up going 3 for 3 on wild chrome hens the next morning, all drift fishing eggs with a puff ball and a little yarn. I could feel every little rock, pebble, and was amazed at the rod's sensitivity. Each bite I got was amplified by the graphite handle. I also really like the reel seat. The reel sits real low to the blank and fits nicely in my hand. Very sleek. I am an accomplished drift fisherman so detecting bites is never a problem for me but these rods really telegraphed every little nuance. I bet I end up feeling fish I never would have known were there.

Fighting the fish was awesome. Plenty of backbone in the rod,has a great action and bend to it. One of those fish was a 12 pound dime bright hen, fought awesome, and I was able to land her quickly. In short these rods are the bomb.

I also bought a first strike float rod but I have yet to land a fish on it. So far fishing the float rod I really like how light it is for an 11 foot rod. I will post more about that one when I start fishing it more.

I hope that was a little more comprehensive ,as I certainly didn't intend on giving "not even half of a review" ,so I threw in a few more details. But hey nobody is perfect, and I have been busy and also had the flu,so I'm not all there.

I have a StR 1134 they made into a casting rod for me. This rod has lived up to what I was hoping for! The weight and feel is amazing! Casting is great! I agree that I can feel more fish as well! Fighting this years steelhead I have felt more confident and have only lost one so far. But just tonight when I was changing out reels I noticed this. I have babied this rod from the start and I'm always making sure that it is seated good when I am out fishing. Haven't talked to them yet but it is kind of disturbing. I am sure that they will take care of it, but I want to be able to keep using it to fish.

They will make good on that. There was a mix up when my friend and I ordered our rods and they sent us a standard wrap instead of spiral wrap. So They shipped out the correct rods asap and gave us a half price discount on the other rods. Great customer service, just call them.

I think the sales they have been having are pretty smart. Gary sees loomis seriously dropping the ball (in my opinion) and he wants his rods in people's hands, knowing his rods will blow the new IMX series out of the water.

I think loomis is using their name to sell rods, and cutting corners on blanks. I feel like Rogue rods are all around better than the new series of IMX. the classic IMX is still great, but not many options left in that line.

I will be looking at Edge at the sportsmans show. I know they are more fragile than i'm used to, but knowing that I could take care of them. now you have a few classic IMX rods, Edge, and lami SI if you want great steelhead rods.

I didn't have anything to do today so I took my rod to them. I did get turned around because they moved but when I did I asked a woman driving out if she knew where Edge Rods was. She said that she was Mrs. Loomis and told me to follow her. She took me straight to the shop and helped me out! Met Steve face to face then Gary came out and introduced himself. Fantastic people, down to earth! She is taking care of the issue with my rod herself and I can't be happier. It makes me want to buy another.

VERY similar. I do think Edge rods have better action than SI's, as in for the intended purpose of the rods, Edge rods feel exactly how you want them to, SI's are light and lively, but none seem to have the perfect action for the line ratings. (6-8lb SI has too much butt, 8-12 SI is a little more moderate than it could be.)

I think Gary has so much experience, he can get things absolutely dialed.

I will probably get one too;)

I do want to see the newest Cousins first, Josh has a very good mind for steelhead rods.

Glad to see Gary plans to expand, that means he plans on sticking around. I really like Rogue rods (best bang for your buck) but they have sold so many times I almost don't want to buy from then, their warranty policy has changed a few times, and it seems like that company may never settle down.

Loomis ticked me off, as well as getting rid of many of their best rods, so I cannot confidently buy them.... Edge and Cousins seem like my best bet.
