Hello - The East Fork Lewis River Reconnection Project breaks ground this week. It is a two year restoration project that spans three river miles from Lower Daybreak Park to just downstream of the Ridgefield Pits (Cemetery Bend). The in-water work window is April 15-Oct 15. During this work window, Clark County has closed access points to the river for construction and the Daybreak boat ramp will be for take-outs only -- it is a mandatory take out point for all boats. During construction, a temporary bridge will be installed with limited clearance, a coffer dam will be built, and a temporary channel will be created to facilitate the de-watering of the Ridgefield Pits for restoration.
Project updates, including access info, can be found here on the Lower Columbia Estuary Partnership website (I cannot post a link due to site rules for first time posts)

Please help spread the word.

The project has three main goals: restore salmon and steelhead spawning and rearing habitat that was lost due to gravel mining and the river's avulsion into the Ridgefield Pits during the flood of 95/96; reduce flood risk and erosion impacting homes and businesses long the river; and to improve public access to the East Fork (this land is part of Clark County's long term vision for a greenway trail along the river)

thank you

Hi - updating this post with closure info:
River access reminder: public access to the river—including boat launching at Daybreak — will remain closed. Revegetation crews will be on-site throughout the winter planting thousands of native trees and shrubs. To protect crew safety and support plant survival, public access will remain closed at the following locations:
  • Danger Park/East Fork Lewis River Greenway
  • Bjur Road
  • Cemetary Bend
As a precaution during the first year of river restoration, the Daybreak boat launch will remain closed for launching boats, but it will be open for take-out. Please help spread the word!

And for fun, here is a photo of what the area formely known as the "Ridgefield Pits" looks like:

Water levels on the East Fork Lewis River remain very low so the inundation of the newly restored floodplain will take time. However, things are already looking very good—a beaver was spotted checking out their new river home immediately after the coffer dam was removed!
