Emet tolerates being on the water. His main requirement is being within 5' of me so he'll go wherever as long as he gets to do that.

 

I'm always concerned when I see a dog on a boat that is salmon fishing. Salmon poisoning is a very real thing. Just licking the blood from a fish can get the dog sick.

It's easy enough to treat, but it's 85% fatal if untreated, and vets here like to run up a thousand dollars worth of tests before prescribing the necessary antibiotic

 

One of the perks of a relationship with the vet is just being able to call and say I need the antibiotics because the dog was exposed. Not thousands, just med cost.

Fenway was the greatest fishing dog ever. Always wanted to go, never too cold for a swim and always prepared to protect master from whatever was attacking his line. I sure do miss him.

Leo the 75 lb. Golden Retriever is almost 2 years now. Here he is younger. He’s likely the smartest dog I’ve ever had. And now we have a kitten that plays chasey fight games with Leo.

Gauge the Chocolate Lab lived to be 14. He was 94 lbs of wonderful, wise, attentive companion and likely the most photographed dog on iFish:

Wigeon is our 3rd Lab, he is 3 now and a joy, mainly cause we let him survive past 2.

 

I can relate to that. My current lab took until he was almost 2 1/2yrs old to switch from a crazy puppy to an enjoyable dog I can go on hikes with him off leash. Like you I wasn't sure he was going to make it to 3yrs. Turned into the exact dog I wanted.
