Get'em a little pop-up doggie hooch (like this: Dog blind)and put it right next to your laydown, that way you can talk to him as the honkers float in.

dog question
i have been hunting ducks with my dog for some time now and he does a very good job, but within the last year or so myself, cody, and our dads have taken a real liking to goose hunting. i would love to get my dog in on some goose hunting, the only problem that i see is that we hunt out of lay down blinds and i don't know what the best hide for my dog would be. the other question that i have is that my dog tends to get alittle antsy when birds are working us and what would the cure for that be. thanks guys and good luck this season :cheers: :cheers:

You ought to try wedging him behind the back rest inside the blind. The big Final Approach blinds have plenty of room back there for a big dog. That way he's completely controlled and concealed. Or, some guys let the dogs lay at their feet facing toward their feet. Some of the blinds have mud openings on the ends where a dog could put its head out of the blind.

the only that concerns me is when i open up to shoot having the dog right there, on my lap, he could screw up my shootin and he could get hurt, ya know what i am sayin
Someday we are going to read about a dog getting shot or a hunter because the dog was inside the blind.

It's great to have a retriever when you're hunting over water, but isn't it more trouble than it's worth when you're hunting fields? I would leave my dog home if I went on a goose hunt.
Not a chance of leaving mine home. I got a FA legacy, which has room for wide me and both dogs...retriever goes in the bottom pouch and the shorthair (the warm one) likes it under the back rest...Lab only got in the way once.It's great to have a retriever when you're hunting over water, but isn't it more trouble than it's worth when you're hunting fields? However on those wing-tipped running/half-flying birds, a fast dog can actually catch them where a hunter may have to walk/run 3/8s of a mile or more walking/shooting to put them in the bag. :shocked:
I trained my Lab b-itch, 2 Labs ago, to sneak, alongside of me, in a low crawl on geese. She already knew the "Down" command, and I just worked on that by low crawling out in the field and giving her the command "Waay Down" and she'd sneak along head on top of paws making sneaks with me.
My now retired Lab, Dancer, seemed to always sense the need to be hidden from working birds, and on her first trip to the field for Geese I was pleased that she'd hunker down in the Tumbleweeds next to me and hide from the birds when they were coming in. :applause:
My latest YLF, Sparky, hasn't gone out field hunting yet, so the jury's still out. She'll probably need more training, but if that's what it takes, that's what she'll get.
