I want to try this float sometime in the coming month but have never done it. Who does shuttles on this stretch? I understand that there are certain stretches that are closed and others that require a tribal permit??? Where can I buy one of these permits? Whats an approximate float time with stopping to fish most of the likely steelhead water?
Thanks in advance!

You can float that section in a long day, but I suggest taking two days so you have plenty of time to fish. There are many camping spots along that stretch.

You'll need a BLM boaters pass - http://www.boaterpass.com/

The eastern side of the river requires a normal Oregon fishing permit. If you want to fish the western side of the river, you'll need a Warm Springs fishing permit for Area 2 - http://www.tribalpermit.com/

There are a couple shuttles available. I've used Fish's Shuttle Service and Affordable Deschutes Shuttle; Google either of those names and you'll find more info about them.

Have fun and be safe!

Depending on what you're rowing, and your skills on the sticks, you'll want to do your research on the rapids well ahead of your trip as well.

There's more than a few places on that stretch that will eat your lunch if you're not prepared.

plenty of good info on here. search "whitehorse" or "deschutes" for a start.

Are you sure your not thinking of the run below trout creek? There is nothing that ive ever seen in the warm springs to trout creek float and ive been on it quite a few times.

Steve,
If you're just going to float the Warm Springs to Trout Creek section, you won't have to worry about big rapids. If you decide to lengthen your trip, I suggest going with someone who is familiar with Whitehorse... it can be tricky, if you're not experienced (and tricky if you are, for that matter).

Any of the area shuttle services should be able to help you with this. If they can't, they'll usually refer you to someone who can.

You need to go down to Andy & Bax, and get yourself the Dechutes River Boater's Guide. Alternately, you can order it online from several sources... NRS has it.

I live in Madras which isn't too far from Warm Springs, and I have floated that section many times. There isn't really anything to worry about as far as obstacles go. If you are at all worried, stay to the left of all of the big islands and you will be fine. As far as tribal permits go, I wouldn't bother buying one; I am pretty sure that the side of the river you would need a permit for (West side) closed November 1. Check out this site: www.tribalpermit.com I have heard that the Deschutes flows at about four miles per hour in that section, and it is approx. an eight mile float. It can easily be floated and fished in a day, but with the days getting shorter, you would obviously want to start early to get maximum steelhead time in. If you do decide to buy a permit, they can be purchased on line. If you need to get one in Madras they have them at Bi-Mart and Tiger Mart. One more thing... the Deschutes is a heavily regulated river, so make sure you check the regs before you get here. There are some unique rules to abide by. For instance, anything west of the main channel of the river is considered part of the jurisdiction of the tribes of Warm Springs.

Good luck and catch a big one.

Trout Creek Rapids is located at river mile 10.0 (measured from the launch 300 yards upriver frpm the bridge at the Warm Springs crossing). White Horse Rapids is located at river mile 20.8 (which puts it below Trout Creek Rapids). I have the book HANDBOOK to the DESCHUTES RIVER CANYON which you may borrow. It is filled with history, pictures, and has a rapid by rapid guide of the river from Wickiup Reservoir and from the Warm Springs Launch. PM if you want to borrow it. I live in Portland.
