What is a good easy productive drift (lower river) on the Deschutes for Steel this time of year? I just don't want to take a wrong turn and end up in the Wild and senic part of the river!

Down from Maupin, from the Pine Tree put-in down to Lower Mack's take out is fairly routine. If you have single pontoon craft that you can carry from your car to the river you can fish any stretch along that road and just bike or hitch back up from the Mack's take out/put in.

Good advice on that last post. Pine Tree to Mack's is tame.
Macks' down is 25 miles, doable on a dawn to dusk float but you will have to be pushing hard and making time. It can get worse when the winds kick up and the significant rapids are all on the last eight miles of the float.
The crowds are due at Kloan real soon and when the sleds are running you may have a problem finding water to fish anywhere below Washout Rapids so fish it hard from Steelie Flats to Washout and boogie through the rapids and pick off the spots you can get.
