I'm looking for a 4x or 1x4, maybe 2x7 scope for a .300 Savage mdl. 99 that has been in the family for as long as I can remember. It would be fun to carry.
I have several variable scopes in the range you describe, plus 1-4, 2-7 and some fixed power scopes. They all serve me very well. My most powerful scope is a 2.5-8 Leupold,
For almost 20 years my favorite rifle scope combo was a fixed 4x on a pre-64 Model 70 in .270. Basically, a Jack OConnor special.
Over the years I have had two model 99's, one carbine in 250-3000 and another in .308. The .308 was a 99 featherweight and kicked brutally with the downturned comb of the stock. I sold it. The carbine had a fat Beavertail forend and was ill-fitting in a saddle scabbard. Plus the 250-3000 only shot light bullets well. Later the 250-Savage had the twist for heavier bullets, I sold my 250-3000
Going back 50 years ago, I became close friends with a Native American living on tribal land in an adobe home his grandfather built two years after WW1 ended, which was when the Savage 99 came out in the 300 Savage. His grandfather bought one,
That rifle was in its third generation of use then, and for 50 years it hung above the fireplace in that old adobe home.
How many family members and friends borrowed it to hunt deer with, and how many deer were killed with it cannot be counted.
Once a month his grandfather would take his family, wife, son and daughter, to the mission for several days in a horsedrawn wagon, with a saddle horse tied behind. Natives had absolutely no rights or legal protection then.
His grandfather always brought that Savagev99 in 300 Savage along to protect his wife and daughter.
