Yes, I bought a Pro-Troll and yes, they work. Now I want to crimp leaders without having to buy one of everything. 40 to 60# mono leader and 80 to 100# mono pre-leader is my plan "A." A friend uses 26 and 35# 49 strand leader and had 1 failed crimp for about 10 fish in the net. He uses round single brass on stainless and harbor freight crimps. I read aluminium for mono and double sleeves. The oval sleeve looks like a wide and narrow side, one for live and one for dead end. Hoping someone can shorten my learning curve. Eric

Crimping Sleeves – Thimbles – Stop Sleeves
Line Size (Test) Line Diameter Copper Sleeve Size
60 lb. .80mm/0.032″ 1.0mm Mini Double
80 lb. .90mm/0.036″ 1.0mm Mini Double
100 lb. 1.0mm/0.039″ 1.2mm Mini Oval 1.3mm Mini Double
125-130 lb. 1.3mm/0.051″ 1.5mm Mini Oval 1.6mm Mini Double

To be safe you may wish to utilize a thimble so the Mono has a nest to lay in prior to the sleeve 2 B crimped

I crimp everything down to 20# droppers for salmon, and use Duolocks (or equivalent) to link it all together. Very quick to assemble, and makes switching stuff out on the water very easy. I use double barrel copper crimp sleeves from LeaderTec down to 0.6mm for both mono and fluoro for leaders. Haven't had one fail yet. I'd crimp down to 15# if I could find 0.5mm or even 0.4mm double barrel copper crimp sleeves if I could find them. I also crimp 200# mono bumpers for use in front of all our flashers.

I got into the crimping, got all set up with high quality everything. Then i decided to do pull tests. It was horrifying. A perfect crimp doesnt come anywhere close to a halfway decent knot. They broke at half the line rating or worse every time.

I wouldnt bother with it.

Hubbs: More spit on your Fluoro and pull the knots tight slowly. Dunno what knot your using but maybe a change is in order?

Oregon Steel: You could be crushing the line by using too much pressure. Try a little less crimp and make sure your sleeves match the line diameter. I like the oval sleeves because the line squeezes against its self and less prone to damage from over crimping. It takes a bit of practice to get the hang of crimping. Don’t overdo it.

I get the 0.8mm sleeves from Leadertec, and the 0.7mm and 0.6mm online from CatchAllTackle in Maryland. I'm still looking for 0.5mm and 0.4mm to allow me to crimp down to 10# mono/fluoro.

For the heavy bumpers I use the BillFisher sleeves from Fisherman's Marine.

I tried some crimping for ProTrolls. It worked but I didn’t want to buy an expensive crimper, I used pliers. Now I’m back to set ups with 80lb Jinkai mono. Ties knots like 30lb Ultra Green. Strong and stiff enough for ProTroll success.

I learned 25 years ago it was a waste of money not to use the correct crimping tool on leaders. I learned correct crimping techniques from warm water salt water fishing. Crimps done correctly will trump knots every time

FnH13:

Those light bumpers work just fine till you get a tangle. If you’re good at avoiding these, you may not see the benefit. Something else. Stiff leader/bumper components force swivels and bead chains to work better if they get a little dirty to reduce twisting. You still need to use a rudder or notched slider above a 360 to avoid line twists especially with soft braid.

If you have loaner rods rigged for inexperienced fishing guests, you’ll be glad they’re set up for that.
