Hey all, so as it would be I need to go to DMV tomorrow. I am in ranier or and it seems Astoria is my destiny. ..... is there a good pier I can toss a trap out at to snag a crab or 3 since I'm there? Haha thanks all...

12th Ave bridge in Seaside if you're going past there. Though I imagine you'll travel Hwy 30 and won't have the opportunity.

It's honestly kind of ridiculous that there isn't a single pier/crab dock in or around Astoria that's open to the public for fishing. Little Garibaldi has what, at least two? I've only crabbed off the dock one time in Garibaldi but it was a blast and there was quite a few other families out enjoying the resource who probably wouldn't have been able to otherwise. We even managed 12 nice keepers with just three traps fished for a couple of hours. Good times!

The CR is a whole different animal than a small bay.

Reality is if we do put a crab pier in near deep enough water to catch crab, the peoole crabbing there will likely use too light of gear for our currdnt and within 6 months the will be so much derelict gear near tge pier it will become unfishable.

Warrenton is working on a plan to build a crabbing pier off the viewpoint in Hammond, but money and if it's even permittable or possible has that years out.

The most logical plan would be to put a path on top of the east rockwall breakwater at Hammond and let people walk out and fish and crab there. Again though, who pays for it and how do we keep it from becoming the mess 12th street in Seaside is?

There's already the jetty rock pier they're using for barging rock to the south jetty. Shame the corps can't just leave it there after completion to be used by the public. I used to beach snare crabs there with good success. If they added a lower floating fishing dock on the side of it, it could be a great fall Salmon fishing pier as well.

I've only seen it from the water. Are you talking about the rock barge and pilings at east end of SS beach?

I suppose they could do something there. We get a lot of people that wanna crab from shore. I spend way too much time discussing the limited shore crabbing options with people.

I only contacted the Corp via FB when they were posting about this project. I asked them if they had any plans to leave the rock dock in place and save the expense of removing it. And also converting it to a public use dock and they said they had no plans for leaving it and will remove as soon as the project is complete.

It sure seems to be placed perfectly by the Columbia River Beach parking lot accessed via Fort Stevens, a great place for the average Joe without. 4x4 rig to access beach crabbing and fall fishing. Sure seemed like it would be a win win to leave it but doesn't sound like they want to consider it, at least at the time I asked.

It also seems like a great potential spot for a commercial entity to take over or lease to add things like on the piers in Florida, California etc that aren't really feasible in the open ocean around here. Small shops or eats, etc. it would seem to get a lot of use like the crabbing pier in Garibaldi, only with more potential being close to fort Stevens and Astoria, Warrenton, ilwaco etc.
