Still in an ongoning debate on the ultimate crawdad bait......shad or salmon carcass. Met a friend of a friend up at Timothy that swears that he did just as well as salmon with spent corn cobs!

What is your favorite bait? yeah. yeah, yeah...cat food......

I like shad the best. Just cut a steak and put in trap. Change bait daily or catch will drop off.

Just picked up 8+ doz. dads in the Trask in one evening on 4 hot dogs in one pot. We were amazed. Have tried everything but shad (save them for crab) with not as much succrss.

In the south we used something called melt - it is a cows pancreas - really clowned them.

As a kid we would swear by bacon-it attracted well, was oily and fatty. Plus it was tough enough if you were using string and a weight, the line could be cinched around it without cutting through it, important if you don't want the crawdads stealing your bait on the way to the top.If we couldn't get some bacon then we went with bologna but it didn't stay on the lines as well.
When I got a trap, I tried fish(salmon, carp) but they seemed to a lot more reluctant to "come in and dine".IMHO something fatty and stinky(That melt stuff sounds like the ticket, especially if its good and "ripe".

Someone told me, I swear, it's a reliable source... Cantalope! As over ripe as the melon can get and still hold together. Said it works well to clean the bugs out, too.

Fresh trout from the water you're trapping in.

They love it, they need it, they have to have it.
