I just left our monthly Coast Guard Aux. meeting at Cape Disapointment. The Coast Guard Liason member was telling us about the new ruling covering Naval vessels and recreational boaters. There is a 500 Yard zone around all Naval Vessels and cruise ships in the CR. If you come within the 500 yard area, you are facing a fine of up to a quarter of a million dollars and 6 years in jail. If you approach the vessel to within 200 yards, you will be shot! This applies to any and all vessels being escorted across the CR bar, and upriver to Portland. This means the Rose Festival fleet, and all cruise ships. They are expecting over a dozen cruise ships at Astoria this summer, and at least two of them are during the Bouy 10 season. This isn't a joke, these guys are very serious. They informed us of this tonight, and are requesting that we notify the public during vessel examinations and dealer visits. The only way you may be within the 200 yard area legally is to hail the vessel and identify yourself, and pass at a very slow speed, making no sudden moves.

Geeze, this could be challenging! Imagine 500 boats trolling B-10 at the end of August with 2 foot seas and a strong cross wind all trying to figure out whether they are 500 yards away! Or all trying to hail the vessel to identify themselves? Is a hook-set considered a sudden move? Can we respectfully request that all naval vessels and cruise ships traverse the lower Columbia between midnight and 2 am? I can't imagine how this will work! Will there be an escort fleet enforcing the perimeter?

That's alright with me. I already wear a flak jacket at B-10!

The feds are a bit jumpy these days. I hope the folks in the field show some good sense.

Slugranch,

They are serious but it is a joke.

Tom Ridge is still trying to figure out who put us on Amber Alert.

Maybe we should wrap the Navy ships and cruise ships in duct tape and plastic sheeting.

So this means when the boats are tied up along the Willamette I can't tow my boat down I-5 near the I-84 interchange?
500 yds pretty much blocks the river around there and then some.

Hey Guys, I'm sorry about the post, but that is what we were told. This is going to be a fiasco during the bouy 10 season to say nothing of the rest of it. There is a cruise ship crossing the bar at 0600 today and will be tied up at Astoria all day and leave this evening. All of the time it's in the river, it will be surrounded by armed patrol boats. Anyone getting closer than 500 yards will be intercepted and requested to back off. I didn't dream this up, they told me. I'm just passing it on,,,,,,,,,,,,,

If the fish figure this out and start towing boats in that direction.....

yep, this one got a little too close...

There more ways to die now then ever before. SARS, patrol boats firing at ya, drive-bys, drunk drivers,HIV, terror attacks and just plain crazy people.

Guys, this isn't something new. This information was being handed out by the Coasties at Buoy 10 last August. Just show some common sense and give the Navy Ships as wide a berth as possible, angling away from them rather than towards them.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">Oh it's serious, but the response to it by self important gov't types is not...as we see in this case.

500 yards is about 1/4 mile, the width of the Columbia in many cases...everybody out of the pool!

I don't think Mullah Omar is in the hogline this year...then again...I've seen some pretty strange characters anchored up.

It's going to be funny watching everyone with their laser range finders trying to stay 500 yards away from the Coasties at Garibaldi. Of course all those laser beams will set off the Coastie's missile defense...but I don't think the Coasties will have a chance against the motivated fishing flotilla.

Slugranch,

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">It's OK...we needed the laugh after all the serious talk about dams, forests and hatcheries.

I don't think the W is 500 yards across downtown.

Too bad, now the young ladies can't trade their T-shirt for a sailor hat ... a fine Rose Fest tradition.

I haven't gone down to check out the fleet since 9/11 - I think they set up a "pass-through" lane on the east side?

Really too bad, those ships are very impressive from the waterline!

Geez, a quarter of a million bucks! I don't think my credit cards will cover that much and my boat has a mortage on it. Guess I will have to take the 6 years. Wait a minute, I don't know if I have 6 years left. Come on Coasties, you can chill out a bit now.

Maybe I better repaint my boat. White is a friendlier color than black. Just be glad your name isn't Dave Nelson. According to a news story that name sets off all kinds of alarms with TSA.
