That much money and I'd ask for a professional survey.

 

Same here. Only hurdle would be lead time. Marine survey folks I talked to a while back were all booked-up for quite a while. I've never had one done, but for that kinda money, I would try.

If the boat looks like it was well cared for, along with necessary service records, it’s probably a good candidate. Motor hours probably aren’t an issue most the time but you should know. I’d do a quick look at motor oil(s), fuel and oil filters, etc. How old are the batteries? Look at the trailer as well.

 

I bought a boat from a private seller in WA 9 years ago. It was a friend of a friend. Switching the title and reg. over to OR was no different then if you bought a used boat in OR.

 

I agree with getting a survey; especially if it is a fiberglass boat, or an inboard. Otherwise pay close attention to details and service records w/receipts.

 

For that much money I would expect:

1. Test ride on the water. (It better go smooth). Look at conditions of trailer bunks with boat off.
2. Verbal download on the maintenance history for boat AND trailer. Paper work to back it up would be great.
3. Owner should know how many hours on the motor.
4. Up to date titles in hand for boat and trailer.
