Bergara, buyer beware

Sorry, this is a bit long winded.

Purchased a B-14 wilderness in 308 for my daughter back in October. online reviews were overwhelmingly positive. Liked the appearances and handling. Brought rifle home, checked torque on screws, checked clearance on barrel channel. All looked good. Mounted a one piece rail, nightforce rings and a vx3i on it using scope leveling kit and torqued to spec.

Took to range and got 6''-12" "groups" with 3 different types of factory ammo at 100yds. Ok, something must be fouled up. Went home, dismounted scope, double checked base. Everything checks out. Must be the scope. Swap out scope, same result. Tried 3 different handloads with no success. By now we've got somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 rnds thru the rifle. I had done the recommended break in and had been cleaning every 10 since but decided to do a serious de-coppering since the rifle seemed to foul more than expected. When I picked the rifle up by the barrel i felt something wiggle. Barrel was finger tight!!! Like not even finger tight. Wiggly!

Box rifle up and take back to dealer. They ship off. With covid and M114 and general incompetence on the bergara side i still have not received the rifle back. Called customer service yesterday. Let the manager know that I don't really want this *** back and would like a refund. Was told to pound sand. Manager saw no reason to be concerned about a rifle that was fired repeatedly with a loose barrel. There was no reason to expect the barrel tenion threads or receiver threads to be stressed. When I asked about the excessive head space he said it "was no big deal", worst that could have happened was a light primer strike and a miss fire. Sure

Was unwilling to give credit towards a different rifle or even same model. He was gracious enough to offer $200 worth of Bergara branded sweatshirts and caps so I could brand rep for them in compensation for the wasted ammo.

The dealer, Bullseye Firearms here in Prineville, did offer to give me a refund out of their pocket. I declined their offer. They are awesome people and have enough to worry about with M114.

Should have taken a refund.

Gun shop MIGHT be in a position to talk to Rep of some sort.

I had a Tikka that was similar to your experience. Sold it for a loss, moved on to another Tikka that did exactly what 99% of them do.

Everyone has a problem once in a while.

I am a Ford guy. I've had 6 to date going back to 1980.

While I was running an Focus as a commuter car, the radio went out after....oh...3 years or so. Rig was still under warranty but the deadline was approaching fast. Now, the radio was not so important as the hands-free bluetooth phone connection.

Went through the whole "we don't actually have a way to repair radios anymore we just replace them" and "oh, that radio isn't made anymore" then "we're trying to figure out what to do"...

After 3 weeks of patiently waiting, then being told they had no idea when I might hear back about the issue, I hunted down the number for the regional service manager and left him a voicemail along the lines of "Hi, I've got this problem (case # etc. etc.) and you know, I commute 90+ minutes each way, every day, and my eyes keep flicking back and forth between the blue oval on my steering wheel, and the gaping black hole full of loose wires in my dashboard where my radio used to be, and if you could look into it, I sure would have better feelings towards Ford...."

The next morning I got an email saying my new radio had been found and could I bring the rig in for service. I've had two Fords since, with no regret and no issues. In fact, the radio was the biggest issue I ever had.

Customer service is everything, and sometimes it needs to be compelled.

I have a break-open single-shot CVA Scout 2 pistol in 6.5 Grendel that is nicely accurate. CVA is part of the BPI family and the barrel is a Bergara, which accounts in no small part for the accuracy.
CVA sends a replacement forend screw that will accommodate a sling swivel or bipod, but the one that came with my pistol is so short it won't even engage the threads in the barrel lug. I have sent CVA contact-form emails and heard zero. This defect is not nearly in the class of an untorqued rifle barrel, but suggests a trend of disregard for customer service by BPI. There is something really odd about the outfit anyway. The Scout 2 pistols aren't even mentioned on CVA's current Web site.

What a bummer to hear! I have been considering that same gun or the CVA Cascade ā€œsame Bergara barrelā€ chambered in 300 PRC.
hearing this about their customer service is a little disappointing to say the least. Great customer service in a snap could have made this not so favorable post a positive experience in the end.

I would have also declined the small gun shop out of pocket refund with all the stuff they are having to deal with in Oregon.

What's so funny??? Since all the machining has been completed, the process is really simple. Gotta understand, installing a barrel that's already blued or coated, you have to modify the procedure so as not to damage the finish. Enter the leather and pipe wrench. MacGyver would approve.

Follow up to the Bergara saga. Got the rifle back a few months ago. Tried more reloads than I care to mention. Got a 1 1/2'' group yesterday with 130gr barnes and BLC-2. That's as good as she's going to do I'm afraid. Sad, I really like the handling and balance. Comes up quick and feels nice in the hand. On a side note, Bullsyeye firearms in Prineville are great! They offered to take the rife back again if it didn't meet my expectations. They will be getting all my business from now on.

What are you trading it for at Bullseye?

Maybe try a different reloader who starts from scratch. Maybe you are missing something. Also, maybe try a different shooter just in case. 1 1/2" is very large for a new(ish) bolt gun.

Jimh406, rather get into a pointless peeing contest let's do this. You've all but said I must not be able to shoot or reload to be getting plus m.o.a. groups out of that rifle. I love to gamble and am sitting on some cash. I'll put up 5k. My bet is this. 3 factory loads, 5 shot groups from each. You can pick the loads. Heck, if you win you can have the rifle plus the cash. I'll give you 20 rnds to get familiar with the trigger. Best overall averaged group walks with 5k. I'm available every weekend until June. Gonna get busy with stream restoration work after that.

I'm not a Bergara owner or fan boy, btw. I have no idea how well you shoot or don't shoot, or if you are the best reloader in the world. It was a pretty simple point. It would be easy to rule out your reloads or how you are shooting if you want to by trying different reloads or have a different person shoot it. I can understand if you are confident in your abilities as well. Of course, a shooting contest or reloading contest between us won't make that gun shoot better. Likewise, you have no idea how well I shoot or don't although you might like to gamble.

Any way, there seems to be other possible fixes. Here's one. In this person's case, there was overspray on the mini chassis. He sanded it off which I would suppose improved the bedding. He also notes that there is a Bergara forum if you are interested.
