Buck Fever and Bofus brought up a couple of things. Carbonated beverages, this includes sparkling water. This puts CO2 in your stomach and if you can't burp it up before going to bed, you're going to have a bad night. Sleep on your left side. This places the entry to your stomach as high as possible. If you sleep on the right, you're going to have a bad night.

I've dealt with this for the last 30 years of my life. I was given the option of surgery, and at the time they didn't know how long the surgery would last (some people have to get it re done after 10 years) or take prevacid (the other types doesn't help)

I have found diet is the biggest thing.. If I am good and stay away from, (for me) Carbs I do great... I also don't eat after 7pm at night. When I do have severe issues, it's the chair, as even with my adjustable bed, the chair is the best.

Good luck!

Sleep on your left side. Multiple research studies have found that being on your left side is the best sleeping position for people with GERD. Sleeping with your left side down reduces reflux episodes and exposure of the esophagus to stomach acid.
Funny, right side is more comfortable for me. I remembered, I take a teaspoon of baking soda in a half cup of cool water at bedtime. A few good burps and all is well. Warm water builds too much pressure.

I am taking omeprazole 40 mg one every morning 35 -60 minutes before any meal of the day. I take it at bout 6:30 am and then by 7:30 I eat some water melon..maybe handful of bran or oat meal plain..with tad bit of salt..sometimes I'll add a lil bit of canteloupe to my oatmeal. Very lil serving.
Going for my appointment tomorrow and fingers crossed.

Keep us informed. Please. I too fight this and the omeprazole is no longer working after years of reflux. I try to be super careful about foods: tomatoes and coffee are sure to cause a flare up. Chocolate any time after noon is a killer. I get strong chest pains in evenings, then reflux an hour after going to bed. Ice cold water makes the chest pains go away, usually. Thorough heart workup and no relation of chest pains to exertion looks like the chest pains are related to reflux.

I have trouble breathing after many of the reflux episodes. Sucks. Left side sleeping helps some. Drinking huge amounts of ice water seems to be a big help. More tests coming for me. The medical system moves along at a snail's pace nowadays.

BTW, you might consider re-spelling the title of this thread. 'Acid Refux' sounds like potentially way more fun than it actually is...

Yep...for a while there was no burping or anything and sharp chest pains would not let me sleep. ER cleared me of any cardiovadcular issue. And one of ER guy suggested to discuss oesophagus spasm and acid reflux with my PCP. My Dr is super awesome guy. He has been seeing me for ever since I'm in Oregon....for quite a while now. He pushed referals and tests so fast and because of him I got call from digestive health center next day. Usually thats not the case but when I srnt him text at 6;30 in morning for color of my stool. His one line my chart mssg was I'm sending an urhent referal to digestive health center and next day I got call for tomorrow's appt. If not for him, I would be in much more misery. I sincerely wish there's more Dr like him on this planet. My symptoms and your symptoms in terms of chest pain are same. Excruciating. I've nights where I mostly sleep on reclining couch. I miss my bed. No matter how comfy that couch is notjing beats a sleep on your bed. The black stool is recent development..in last two days. No vomit feeling however. One night was so horrible that I can taste the acid in the back of my throat but still no vomit or any such feeling. All I want is sleep on my bed.

Thnx for adding the humor! I fixed it

Sorry you're suffering from this affliction, @piscean. I have occasional issues if I eat late dinner, or certain types of foods. I just eat a bunch of tums and drink milk when it happens, then I prop up my adjustable base bed to sleep slightly upright. Start a food journal of what you ate, when you ate, and how bad the reflux was. This will let you know what foods to avoid. If I am eating pizza for dinner, it can't be late. I wish you luck, my friend!
Same for me, I really can’t eat after 6pm or I will ask for trouble. It’s hard, but stop the after dinner eating or any late night eating.

Fatty foods is what causes my acid re-flux. generic prilosec every day keeps most in check. Beef fat is the worst for me. Chicken fat. Pork fat are also an issue. Trim the fat. PS: oat meal tears me up

Went to my appt today and they want to conform few more things. This procedure called manometry is outpatient procedure but uncomfortable. A catheter is going to be inserted in my nostril after numbing it, back of my throat will be numbed as well..and then I'm suppose to swallow and that will read the pressure applied by my oesophagus by moving tube in different areas of my oesophagus. So yep....I'm dreading the day but whats need to be done, needs to be done. There's another test as well can't remember but after that the nissen fundoplicatiin will be done ...as in tieing my stomach around my oesophagus to strengthen it.

I have suffered from this for years (40+). At first I ate Tums by the handful , it burned my throat so bad that it built up scare tissue and sometime I can't swallow some foods (mostly poultry) and I choke. I now take omeprazole 30 min before dinner (at the first my Doc had me taking it twice a day) and eat dinner by 5pm. I sleep propped up for the first half of the night. When I first lay down I lay on my right side , I seem to burp up any air in that position then turn on my left side to sleep. I also keep away from eating spicy foods late in the day, It only bothers me once in awhile when I stray from my routine. The worst part is waking up with the burning so bad you can't take a breath

@piscean I am there for you, I developed a severe reflux condition back in March. I had a minor problem with it for years prior, but not like what befell me in March. I started in urgent care, then to the hospital at midnight for all the tests (heart, lungs, liver, pancreas, kidneys). From there on we go to a colonoscopy and endoscopy, I for now am taking 40mg Protonix in the morning and before dinner. I have had to change my life considerably as far as diet goes, with all the recommendations from above posts. The endoscopy showed no H Pylor but inflammation in the stomach and discoloration of the esophagus but no Barretts. Along with this at the beginning I ended up with Anxiety, I had never had any experience with anxiety, but can tell you that it is no joke and it seems you may be experiencing some of it as well. Anxiety can exacerbate your symptoms and should be dealt with believe me. I am not sure what brought mine on, but did have c19 middle of February and weeks later had this to deal with. Not sure c19 had anything to do with it or it was stress or something else, but can understand what you are going through.

Yes yes and yes....100% on anxiety.. I got everything done heartwise. Cuz I never thought of acid reflux so bad that I've to be rushed to ER. I had colonoscopy done about year or a lil more ago..came fine. Endoscopy waa sane like you. The Barium xray showed acid upto my clavical bone. I am on super non acidic diet and started a food journal as well. No covid but a lot of stress...a lot....about my parents. Long story. But this all started happening about 2-3 months ago..very aggresive since middle of June. I donno if I'll ever be able to get my normal life back but I made clear with my Dr that if surgery can take care of it even 90%...I'm in. Cannot sleep...short breathed even while sitting. Feeling something stuck in my throat/chest all rhe time.....its just too much. Thank you for reaching out and I appreciate it.
