The week started out about as good as it gets with Mike arriving in Garibaldi Tuesday around 3:00 pm. I had given him fair warning to be ready to fish that afternoon, so after a 5 hour flight…2 hour drive…we were now headed further west in hopes of an afternoon bite.
Del Stephens was aboard to offer some insight into the Oregon Tuna Fishery and its history…plus we all know Del is an all around great guy! Mother Nature gave us a super ocean and best of all, fish played ball! We made the long 14 mile run out at 25kts and were fishing in 30 minutes!

Started with troll gear…Archer Bars and a couple of clones…10 minutes in…ZINNNGGGGGG! Double on with the Archer bar getting slammed! Went on to catch a few more on the troll gear and then Del showed him the Tuna Bite on the slide…FISH ON! So we have two hanging on the Archer Bars…Del has just made it a triple and I’m tossing out a few live baits…after boating the 3 we had on…5 more came on the little squiggles. Day 1: 2 hours of fishing yields 6 troll fish, 1 plastic and 5 live bait fish.

Day 2: Troll day…all troll gear all day long…the Archer Bars made a strong showing again by hooking double digits for us on a day we put 20 in the boat…had we not taken 200+ pictures…we could have put 50 on the deck…they were slamming the bars 2 and 3 at a time. We got bit on clones and cedar plug chains as well. This was also the day of the “big fish”…Mike was kind enough to take the blame in his blog on Sport Fishing Magazines home page…however we all know it was knot/captain failure.

Day 3: Another late start and another great day or should I say half day, we never really fished a whole day. Mike fished 6 straight days and I managed 7 out of 9 days…we put about a dozen fish on the boat and called it good.

Day 4: Tuna Time took Mike out at 5:30 for a “real” day of Oregon tuna…a rough ocean, running 9 lines and pulling blue cord. They had a ball in the snotty seas and managed 8-10 fish before calling it and running home with the north winds howling! He really enjoyed his day with Dick and believes they too hooked a big fish. Thanks again Dick!

Day 5: Tournament Day…with Mark Mc, Marty and Mike on his boat the” Shake-n-Bake”…can’t beat spending a day with a couple of the most informed and seasoned anglers on our coast. Mike Mazur had plenty of good things to say about Mark and Marty…Marty got the nod for best angler! The whole fleet represented what is so awesome about this group…he was very impressed with everyone’s effort in helping the needy in our communities and each other. There are many fishing tournaments that donate fish…but we’re the only one that focuses on it. Hats off to all the Dogs!

Day 6: While we should be frowned on for leaving Del and John the mess…Mike wanted another day so how could I say no? Nalu and Seely rounded out the crew so we again left late…found a decent ocean and caught 7 or 8 fish…again picture taking was killing the fishing time…but it was cool to learn how to get good outdoor/fish photos. Nalu was a big help in this process being a fine photographer himself.

Dinner last night at Jake’s downtown and he has had a good taste of Oregon and our fish. We ordered everything from crab cakes, jumbo prawns, halibut cheeks, salmon, steelhead and tuna… and some Oregon Pinot to wash it all down…fantastic meal…he was talking about moving by the time desert arrived! Fresh berry cobbler with ice cream…you kidding me? It was sick!
Anyway…you can expect a nice story on our fishery coming next summer (June 08)! Thanks to everyone that helped with making his stay a special one!

I will second the Nice Guy aspect of Mike. Got to talk to him at dinner after the tournament. He did seem very impressed with what was going on.
We sat in my office last night and watched your 2007 videos...there will be some love coming Tracker's way...he was impressed with your work...minus the beating heart crap...not really something the Editor would sign off on.

The Killer Whale stuff really had him pumped as did the underwater shots.

The Top Gun sound track...Lovin' it!
