Did you guys see this in the newspaper article: "NOAA Fisheries officials said the federal agency will focus its orca recovery efforts on restoring salmon runs..."???

I don't know about you but I think that's a good use of government money. I've seen it spent on a lot worse things.
I hope you're right...but I'm skeptical. I see us sport fishermen getting cut off far sooner than the netters. The way I see it, if we want to improve salmon runs, we should start hunting sea lions. I'd bet that 100 or so of those guys kill more salmon in a year than all the Puget Sound sport fishermen combined. I'd be curious to see their numbers.

The ESA is written and executed in a very specific way so as to protect biodiversity and keep species (defined as: ´any subspecies of fish, wildlife or plant and any distinct population segment of any vertebrate fish or wildlife which interbreeds when mature´) from going extinct.
Without the protection of this act, the American Bald Eagle would have gone completely extinct years ago, because they were being hunted for food and diversion. Same goes for nearly all species of whales, Bison, and several evolutionary significant units of salmon here in the Pacific Northwest (just to name a few).
If we do not do everything in our power to protect our fish and wildlife, there will be nothing left for us to hunt or fish.... imagine life without hunting and fishing!
The ´environmentalists´ are not the enemy here, those of us (humans) doing the polluting and otherwise ****** our planet are the ones who need to be stopped.
Please!
Those of us who are not trained in biological sciences need to leave the management of species to those of us who are.
