Ran NW out of Nehalem today at first light. Started in 225 feet of water. Trolled my way west with no bites for the first 20-30 minutes. Then I hit 260 feet of water. 55 degrees. Let go about a 12 pound chinook. Then it went wide open and I was getting but every 2-3 minutes trolling west with my one solo rod out. Only problem was 90% of them were wild. Let go probably 15-20 really nice wild coho and a couple hatchery dinks to get my two 8-10 pound hatchery coho by 8:45am. Bite was starting to slow down but was still getting bit every 15 minutes or so towards the end. Ended up just doing about a half mile loop on that pod I found until I was done. All bite were between 260 and 280 FOW. I didn’t really look how far north I was but I would guess just about straight off manzanita. Go get them!

We did a long leader trip this morning. Around 930am a commercial crabber came over channel 16 and made a general broadcast. ā€œIf any salmon fisherman care, I’m running gear just north of the north jetty in 14 fathoms and there are jumpers everywhereā€.
There you go. Coho from the jetty tips out to probably 350’.
by the way. The ocean kind of sucked today. Guess I’ve been spoiled last week.

Depth is one thing, temperature is another. We found a 1.5 degree break that happened over about 1/8th mile that worked pretty well for us Saturday. The coho were mostly on the colder side of the break. Might want to add that bit of into to the process.
