2022 Mt. Emily Rifle Bull - Asking for your insight

Hello ifish community. I’m posting this to ask for any insight you all are willing to share with me.

My name is Bryan Kimball and I drew the Mt. Emily Rifle Elk tag with 20 points for the 2022 season. I’m excited for the opportunity to hunt this unit for the first time. I’m 50 years old, an Oregon resident, am in good shape and have never harvested an elk. I have helped pack them out, have called them in to friends/family and had one stolen from me a number of years ago. I have spent a fair bit of time archery and rifle hunting throughout my life so I’m not a rookie and understand that a harvest is not guaranteed even in the Mt. Emily unit. To be honest, I haven’t spent much time elk hunting over the past 15 years due to work and other priorities.

On 1/1/2022 as I was setting goals for the year, I made a commitment to myself to get serious about elk hunting again…maybe that’s what it took to draw this tag? Rather I think it was the 20 points. 😉 I’ll be happy with a great bull and hope for a 6x6. By no means will I pass up a great bull for the dream of a 350+ once in a lifetime.

Some of my preparation and planning for this hunt include:
  • Purchased a new Christensen Arms 300 win mag and am currently building and testing loads prior to sending in my dial.
  • Have good optics including a Vortex spotting scope and Lieca range finder binos.
  • Have a call into the wildlife biologist.
  • Plan to scout by plane, take a couple of boots on the ground scouting trips and will arrive 4 days prior to opening day.
  • Have a crew to help me on the hunt include both my sons (22 and 23), my brother in law and possibly a couple more.
  • Have access to an outfitter for packing if needed.
  • Continue to read through ifish posts to help educate myself.

I want to be as prepared as I can be in the pursuit of punching this great tag. So…I’m asking any of you for your insight with what you think will help my success. I’m not asking for specific locations of where to hunt but certainly won’t turn anyone down if information is volunteered. You are welcome to PM me, call or text me at 907-201-7139.

I’ll follow up to this post after my hunt to let you know if there was a 50 year old man crying with joy in a deep Mt. Emily canyon. Thank you all in advance. Good luck to you all as well this season. Cheers

Congrats on drawing that tag! Sounds like you've set yourself up for success pretty well for this hunt.

FYI, you would get a lot more responses/feedback on the hunting forum, instead of the community forum.

Could this be the best "any information would be appreciated" post ever?

I know nothing about the unit, but I appreciate your preparedness and how much you shared thus far. I was going to offer glassing and/or packing help, but it sounds like you've got that covered too!

Solid advice from saltaddict, to put this in the hunting forum.

Thank you kindly, I reposted it on the hunting forum!

Thank you...who knows, I may need more glass in the field when the time comes. I appreciate the offer. I reposted this in the hunting forum.
I can offer no help, I only hunt fish but I wish you luck!

I met a tag holder and his whole party spent time telling me that I needed to be dialed at 900, the next day I shot my bull at 45yds. Just make sure your dialed for 100 or so as well with yer big boy gun. I’d be interested to hear if flying around in the unit does any good. I saw a lotta scouting planes that either didn’t care or didn’t see the 350+ bulls they were flying over because they sure didn’t hunt em!!
Good luck to you sir and remember it’s all about the experience.

No, I don't have a 2k acre ranch you can hunt
Dude congrats. I wouldnt waste time doing a plane ride as a scouting trip. Get boots on the ground and find glassing knobs. Take a few days before season off and just glass glass glass. Then I think the best advice anyone could give a guy hunting a big bull tag. Don't get all bound up on killing a big scoring bull. Personally I would shoot the first bull that gets me excited.

Another plan to have is what kind of mount you want to have done. In the bottom of a hole with tons of packing a head it can fog your brain. Always good to have that figured out before you start cuttin.

Dont waste your time with a plane scout, save that money, and put it towards ammo and practice shooting over 500 yards. be comfortable and confident with shots across canyons on steep hill sides. you won't find anything from a plane that you can't find from google earth, or boots on the ground.

If you need help, feel free to PM me, i run trail cameras up there year round, and always enjoy helping guys out with that unit. i was up there yesterday setting a few more cameras, and will be going up again before too long to set even more.

Solid advice. I'll add that to my list. Thank you.

Hover your cursor over his screen name - window pops up; click MESSAGE int he lower right corner of the box. Though there may be a minimum number of posts required - verify with the AUP.
Otherwise, good luck and report back on your process; it's always fun to live vicariously through these folks with these tags [and you can do so without too much detail...]. Enjoy and be safe!

It’s really simple, just go there during rifle deer season, and there will big bulls in every drainage, on every ridge, rutting it up in every meadow. Ran into so many bulls the first day, I started packing my camera the rest of the hunt, No Bucks during daylight hours, and only 2 on my pre dawn drives to the daily new spots

My wife drew this tag in 2018 and mentored our then 12 yr old. So many guys on this forum were a huge help. We also talked to many other tag holders while hunting that were super helpful. As already mentioned, I'd get there early and find good areas to glass. It's definitely steep and deep country. It took us 8 days to put my son on a good bull. Definitely not a cake walk. Now, all I can think about is getting back there with a tag. Congrats on the tag. Enjoy the adventure.
