I recently acquired three 30" weighted re-bar crab pots and am entertaining the thought of purchasing a Line/Pot Puller.
Fisherman's currently has $100 off the Scotty Line Puller bringing it to $399.
I like it's compactness although the short boom which runs perpendicular from the gunnel does not lift the pot out of the water like a davit would. Using this for my Danielsons would be fine but not so much for these. I think.
The other two that I've researched are the Ace Brutus plus and Trac puller.
The Ace Brutus costs around $600 and the Trac around $500.
The Ace attracts me because it adopts to the Scotty downrigger bases and electrical port. It seems to be a little heavier built than the Trac.
I've seen Lester's Craigslist ads but his $1200 + range puts them in another league that I'm not worthy to play in.
Thank You all for your referrals.

I have an Ace. Works well. The best part is that it breaks down, goes in a bag and gets out of the way. Perfect for the one or two pots I put out.

If you’re really into ocean crabbing something bigger would be better. The Scotty base is the weak link, and the boom is short.

I have one of the original version Ace/Brutus units and use it to pull shrimp pots which are heavily weighted and set in 300+ FOW and my only comment is that it is fairly slow. Ace is now using a faster motor and one can also buy and install that faster motor on the earlier version if desired - but it comes at a price.

My boat has an EZ Pull and I like it and am satisfied with it, no experience with any other pot pullers. I've had mine for 10 years or more and I usually put my pots in 140 to 150 fow and rarely deeper, but occasionally shallower if I crab in the summer. The pots I use are all the 30" pots are most are heavy.

I don't know the cost of the EZ Pull pot pullers. I already had a heavy davit and took my davit pole and arm up to Buck and he mounted the puller for me.

For mine and I bet for any of the electric pot pullers, it works best if I "select" the bigger of my two batteries.

I have the Trac new this last summer, it also fit right into my Scotty mount. I use danielson pots with 7 lbs of weight in them the puller has no issues. We also started using some much larger square pots with about 10 lbs of weight in them and they were handled without issue. Only problem I see so far is the shirt boom arm we may also have it fabricated to a David. All in all I like the unit.

I have one of the older? Ace Brutus pot puller and after doing some research because of the short arm, I called the manufacturer in Nanaimo and found out that there is a longer arm available, so I ordered one. Also, there is a different base mount for attaching to the scotty base or swivel base. It is made of aluminum and used two bolts to hold.
If you would like to take a look at mine, you are welcome to give me a call or PM and I will give you directions.
I live in Milwaukie/Clackamas area.

Anna, that is what I use but I bought a extender boom and it pushes it out an additional 36ā€ so that your pots can come all the way up and not scratch or damage your boat. It takes a little modification but it is simple. The extension costs about $35 I believe. I did the same with my 24ā€ downrigger booms too.

I have had an Ace Brutus now for 7 or 8 years. Have had no trouble with it at all. Pulls my 30 inch pots no problem. Haven't had any issues with it. As previously mentioned it is a little slow and I wish the arm was higher. Hadn't realized that a longer arm was available will have to check it out. I like the fact that it breaks down and can be easily stored until needed.

My wife and I crab by ourselves pretty frequently and this has certainly enabled us to do so pretty well. I felt sorry for her having to pull all those pots off the bottom while I drive the boat. :jester: But I have always looked out for her, I bought her a snowblower when we lived in Montana.

Ha,
After 25yrs I bought Her a Dyson vacuum cleaner from great things said about it on an ifish thread.
I'm currently working on an Ace Brutus deal and will certainly look into the extended boom.

I have an Ace that I bought 8-9 years ago from a guy on Coastside who used it for about 10 years. I use to crab with a dozen 30-32" rounds weighted with an additional 10 lbs in 200' of water. Never a problem and at times I'd pull 2 pots at a time due to someone potting me in. With 2 pots full of crab I'd have to help it some but definitely been a fine little portable puller for me. Now I hardly crab and I use Danielson's so it doesn't have to do much...

I'm with you as a three time ACE owner. In all the years and units I've never had a lick of problem. They are convenient, simply fold them up and toss under the seat. My latest I bought used from another boater that had sold his boat and the guy didn't want to pay for the ACE. It was still new in the box and was the Brutus 40 plus. I find the boom they have works out great. I would not even think about a tall boom rig and having to deal with that again. My ACE has pulled some pots so heavy with crab that it took two of old guys to handle it. Hands down these ACE units are worth the money.

I bought a used Ace and ran pots in the south Puget sound from october till january 1st,, the last week of december it started smoking, then died.. Had to use my brothers 10 old ace to bring the gear in, these pot were out 24/7.
I called ace told them I bought the puller used, he had me ship it $20.00 as I recall.. they sent it back no charge with a brand new motor.. Im hard on pullers !!!

Talk about a great company though :thisbig:

That's customer service above and beyond for sure.
I'm convinced now that I'll have an Ace puller installed after the finances settle down from the move into the new house.
Hopefully we will be able to start moving in by the 10-11th

There are a couple Holiday deals currently. $525 free shipping for the New Max Torque motor( $250 option if you bought just that motor from ace.) Bulldog line coiler($70) carrying bag.
Costco.com > $529 (Executive member=2% back, and 2% if use their Citi-Visa)
There had been on on CL $450.....not the newer motor though.

I just sprung for an Ace Brutus Torque Max from Costco.com,
Torque Max is their "New" stronger, faster motor.
The Costco deal comes with the upgraded motor, Bully Dog line coiler and their carrying bag and free shipping at $529.

When you are ready to put it on your boat I would love to see what's involved with the mounting.
I could also be helpful by handing you tools and such but I don't move around very good anymore. Making me worthless for climbing in and out of boats.
I'm considering getting one of these but I don't have a standard davit and need to see the possible mounting options

Anyone out there have any experience with the Ace Torque Max mounted on the Cannon "Big Body" HS mounts? Wondering how well they hold up and if they are robust enough to handle the load.
