Default Oldie but Goodie Salmon Book

Found a 1974 book called "How to Catch Salmon - Advanced Techniques" by Charlie White, while at Powells on Hawthorne.

I thought id pass on that it is an easy, fun read...the author, Charles White, was a ODFW biologist in the 1950s and 1960s. He then started the "Undersea Gardens" tourist attraction chain, developed the scotty downriggers, wrote a pile of books, started a television station in victoria, BC, and made feature films about underwater viewing of salmon strikes, shot using underwater cameras he also developed. Phew! What a driven guy! (not to mention running a popular guide service in victoria)

His memories of the ODFW days include some very interesting comments on run timing, for example describing a "Willamette Fall Chinook run that could be predicted to arrive at the Columbia's mouth withing 24-48 hours accuracy, year after year, or biologists would have great cause for concern"

Anyways, if you can find it, it is a really neat book with some great tips, good stories and good illustrations. Theres clearly some things to be learned from a great documentarian and overachiever.

I think that Powells had one more. $6

Yeah, theres been some change in thinking over the last 50 years.

You can call it bildge water, I think it's interesting to read the perspective of an ODFW biologist from the 1950's, and otherwise a great book for salmon addicts in my view...

JMD, I think you missed the subtle joke concerning the bilge water comment.

Charlie White was a pioneer. If you ever get a chance to find one of his videos and watch it, do it. He debunked the myth that salmon slap bait with their tails before eating it (on video) among other things.

Catching them on candy bar wrappers etc.

I'd love to watch those again, good stuff.
