Default Team eyeFISH Jr League conquers the Kenai, Part 1

Oh my, where do I begin.

Kids and I caught at least 100 salmon per day for 8 days straight. Pinks outnumbered coho in the creel by a factor of 10:1 or better each day.

First salmon fell to RodHog... a nice BIG pink. (Sorry, she didn't feel it was pic-worthy)

First silver fell to LMWS a nice plump 9 pound hen.

Man pay real close attention to that magic K13 Kwik... it was far and away the hottest coho plug in the arsenal. Unfortunately the operative word there is "was".

LMWS was also the first to limit on silvers with this fine tide-fresh 11.5 pound hook-nosed buck. This would prove to be the biggest money-winning silver in the first half of the week.

Yeah, baby.... this one's MONEY!

RodHog ended the day with a nice 10 pounder as well.

Lots more coho to come.... stay tuned.

Great post Eyefish and crew

I see your using 510 assist hooks on the plugs....overall performance looks to be working for you!

How often do you put a new plug into the rotation and just have it light the whole boat on fire? One that catches so many fish on its maiden voyage that its bill is indelibly marked by the snap with a permanent "Ring of Life"... the most obvious hallmark of a true swimmer! Well, at least beyond the teeth marks and chipped paint.

This garish K13 was certainly one of those plugs.... chrome base, chartreuse hot tail, metallic green back, chartreuse on fluo orange puddle dots. KILLER!

Here's Alix (Achewter's daughter) with a nice 10 pounder:

Here's LMWS with another 11 pounder:

Let's hear it for the girls!

But let's not forget the boys, either. Here's big brother Drake with another fat coho that succumbed to the same plug.

And even after another change-out of junior combatants, the plug was still HOT HOT HOT!. Here are the McFerron boys Fisher and Duncan tag-teaming it to pose another plump platinum tidewater Kenai coho!

Their daddy Tim joined us later that night to backtroll one of my favorite haunts closer to camp after a late dinner. The magic plug did NOT disappoint this trio. Imagine that... another big boy fell to its seductive wiggle.

But ALAS all good things must come to an end.

"Somebody" got a little greedy one night and decided to send the magic plug swimming off the back of the moored boat. There it sat doing its death dance unattended while I was busily preparing dinner.

Strolled briefly down to the boat to check the rod in between flipping pork steaks.... and ..... ....

The rod is buried and ALL the line has been stripped from the reel, right down to the arbor knot.

Tim and I untie the boat to give chase to whatever took my plug and emptied my 1970's vintage ABU baitcaster. Scrambled eggs like mad to regain line only to find the mystery fish had run the line into a submerged tree. Finally had to break the line to get it free. Sayonara Mr Kwikfish. Another one bites the dust!

HMMMM.... lessons learned the hard way..

Believe it or not, that is a stock color. I believe LJ christened it the "Dead Duck" or something along those lines. It sure was a great clear water plug for the Kenai this year.

The other solid coho producer after losing the magic plug was my my old standby, Measles... in both a K13 and a K15 version. My trusty K13 Measles (also battle-scarred and bearing the infamous Ring of Life) actually hooked the largest coho of the trip... a BIG buck pushing 15-16 pounds. But my newby nephew ran that fish directly into three other lines behind the boat. N-O-O-O-O-O !!!!!!!

The giant hooknose snapped the 12# mainline on its very next violent leap.... OUCH!

ChiefGillRipper is shopping for replacements at the Issaquah GI Joe's as I type.

Success! She found the same plug at the Issaquah GI Joe's, and I can comfirm the stock name for that color scheme is the "Dead Duck"

That Kwik wasn't the only coho catcher in the arsenal. A close runner up was a K13 Measles (LJ = Nickel Firedot) that my nephew lost to a 15-16 pounder on the last day of fishing. Have looked high and low for a replacement, but so far... no dice.

Tammy Fae in a K15 was also a good producer, but she was lost to a broken 12# mainline when my bro refused to throw the buoy and drop off the hook.

Double Cheese in a K13 (LJ = Double Trouble) was uncharacteristically slow for coho this year. The other good color was Willie's Secret.... he was probably smiling down on us everytime we fished that plug!

Wiggle Warts (Brad's Wigglers) were also productive, especially in metallic pink. Here's my niece Miranda with a platinum coho that did NOT miss its appointment with the infamous Dr Death!

And here's ChiefGillRipper with a snow-belly that just could not resist a B-29 Brad's.... pretty, eh?

Gotta love pluggin' for platinum PIGS!
