Default The Dangers of Fishing... with Idiots

Had a doozy of an errant cast from a manhooker stick me in the scalp today. I was baiting up my hook, when all of a sudden, I felt a heavy thud on my hat. I quickly realized when I tried to take my hat off that I was the lucky recipient of an unplanned piercing. My 2 friends were in awe of what happened, and they tried to help out the best they could. One friend was laughing and getting queasy, and the manhooker was looking like a whooped dog in headlights. He felt so bad, but I did my best to reassure him there wasn't any hard feelings. I don't think it worked.

The hook was skull deep. I attempted to yank it out myself, but it was hard, given the location. I tried to explain to my friends how to do the line yank method, but they were too overwhelmed with the situation for me to trust they could do it. My last resort was to pop it back through the skin and clip the barb off,, but i apparently have some meat on this head.. So... to the ER I went! Its probably for the best I went to the ER, as my tetanus shot was overdue, and I felt having a professional remove it was the best route to go. He numbed me up, yanked it out, gave me my tetanus shot and I was out of there in less than 10 minutes. Be sure and watch out while fishing, folks. You don't want to be a manhooker too!

Indeed. I know the owner well. He will get a kick out of this picture.

BTW, the smaller hole above the origin point of penetration is where the point has almost punched back through.

This is my go to fishing hat when combat fishing:

https://www.sportsmansguide.com/prod...hield?a=205160 For the image only!!

We were fishing on Hood Canal for chums several years ago and there were a LOT of people fishing with ALL manner of outfits. One guy continually cast a Buzz Bomb at the moon, with a short spinning rod, that often landed right at our feet. Thank goodness we had time to move because when he reeled in all the excess line he'd rip the rod to the side. We called him Danger Man, and it was always good to keep track of where he as at.

I bet it's going to sting for awhile, but I'm glad you got the hook out safely, CopperMan.

I am assuming your hat did not survive the experience? If it was my

Hooksetter, ya gotta watch out for those, for sure!

Dogz, I was calling him a snaggot, and yes, I did threaten to call him in if he tried to harvest me illegally.

Coastal... mission failure on that!

Bco, the thought, as well as that spinner, did cross my mind.

PNW Chrome, I DID have a hat, but it had to be surgically removed. No spares on board. Not sure if I'm a part of the cupcake, or panzy generation. I get them mixed up.

Lol, that was our youngest sister. I got my brother in the upper lip one day winter steelhead fishing with a double rig. I felt pretty bad about it but he was a good sport and he had me rip it out with some pliers. It bled everywhere but it worked.

It always easier when you can see what you're doing! A little more difficult, in my case...
The Doc advised me that ripping it out when its in your head is not smart. Lots of nerve endings, and if you don't know where they are, its best to seek professional help.

Yes, stumpy. Not only does he know about the social media post (because i told him I couldn't wait to post this story,) but he agrees with the label bestowed upon him during the situation. For some reason, he wasn't argumentative in the least bit. I wouldn't be!

Good thing you had some color on you, he might have bonked you!

Hopefully he at least got some measurements for a mount.

That's an impressive amount of flesh in that spot. I would never think it could dig in so much right there. Glad you got some professional help Whet.

At least ya don’t have to worry about having a bald spot ..... I bet that left a nice Looking scar.

I think going to the ER was a good call. I think I would have been hesitant to take pliers to that one in the field myself if ya asked me too.

I had a deep one in the web of my hand one time with a large hook like that. i pushed the barb through the other side and clipped off the barb to get it out without too much damage. but it wasn’t a fun experience. I don’t much like the idea of ripping one out with a barbed hook. Kirk

I usually fish with single points on MY gear, but I can't control what others use. The same buddy who did this has a slight history of head hooking. He took the hat of our other friend off his head a couple years ago. Maybe this will help him be more spatially aware of his casts?

Don't forget safety glasses! All fun n games until someone loses an eye. I know a guy who was fighting a bobber fish. He got it close to the boat and was giving it one final tug when the hook popped out, and his rod whiplashed the weight directly into his eye. He now has a cloudy, mostly blind eye. When he hooks a fish now, he immediately puts on safety glasses. He says he can't afford to whack his last good eye ball.

I'm always conscious of someone pulling on a snag, especially trees. There's a time to turn away and not watch, including the person who's snagged.

I'm always glad to make a difference in the lives of fellow anglers. You're welcome!

And yes, I saved the hook, blood and a piece of skin on the barb included. I am making a shadowbox picture frame, and will be sure to include it in my collection! Happy Hookoween! ☠

Good lord - how hard did he set the hook? Damn near looks like it straightened out!

Tide, the bent hook was a result of my friend straightening it in an attempt to try and help. It also alleviated some of the hooks pressure in me scalp when I had to walk, row, and TCOB for the next 2 hours or so.

Ouch! Looks painful!

I got smacked in the head with a lure on Sunday, when the guy was yanking a snagged hook out of a tree. Saw it coming the whole time and was able to turn my head. Glad I had a hat on and it just bounced off!

Solo fishing has it's advantages!

Rowman, when I fish alone, I'm still fishing with idiots. No saving grace for me.

And yes stumpy, I informed myself that I would be calling myself an idiot on the internet prior to this post...

Ouch! Did it bleed good?

Saw a guy hook himself in his calf...into the muscle. Pushed the barb through and cut it off then pulled it out.

Boy, the dangers out there. Even bringing it in here brings a whole new world of salt to the table.

Jeesh, Give that man a break. Everyone gets a turn at this! I specifically carry a pair of articulated side cutters mostly for cutting wire, yet it has save a couple of people I know some grief.

I also got hit on the right temple with a chunk of quarter inch pencil lead. I was standing on the rowers seat of my drift boat, spotting steelhead, when my fishing partner up front hung his gear up in a tree across the river. He gave a big yank and the next thing I know is I'm seeing stars on the floor of my boat! I'm lucky I didn't fall overboard on that one.

Keep an aerosol can of anything around, turn it upside down spray the necessary area of skin until frozen. Push barb through. Cut off hook above barb...remove hook. Apply super glue to affect area. 4 days later glue will eventually fade away and your skin will heal.

Been there done that twice now for others.

Now that sounds like a plausible solution! Does the frozen skin get affected as well? I'd figure if one froze the skin too much, that would do additional damage?
