Default Oregon Self-Pump Ends Saturday Night

Quote:
The Office of the State Fire Marshal’s temporary rules change allowing Oregon gas retailers to provide self-service on a voluntary basis ends at midnight, May 23.

Starting May 24, attendants will again be providing service at gas stations in Oregon where self-service is not allowed. Self-service is allowed in some coastal counties and in eastern and central Oregon.
My bet is that it won't take long for self pump to be allowed permanently. It's time.

I hope not! If I wanted a sales tax or to pump my own gas I would live in California.

There has to be a reason Oregon and New Jersey are the only two states that ban self-serv. Hard to believe residents of the two states think alike about many things.

Since it is ending May 23, how did the experiment work for you guys? Did you pump your own or drive to a different station to have it pumped for you?

We've only filled once since this started.
But the refill was at costco, where we had a choice.
Wifey opted to have the assistant do it.
I never got to experience pumping my own gas this time. But have done it many times in the past.

I like having someone doing the fuel up more so for my wife. But when its busy and like Costco with several fuel islands I would rather have the choice of doing it myself or waiting. If your pumping fuel into a boat or motorcycle you have to do it, no choice. If your running diesel you have always been able to pump your own.

Oregon has passed pump your own gas more than once , but the State Fire Marshals office has put the kibosh on it every time as too dangerous.

Used to own a gas station. Think I'm qualified. Hate it when they tell me I can't do it. Seem to do just fine on my own when traveling. Haven't lost the touch.

Remember, Oregon politics is all about jobs and destroying the livability of the area. Screw the consequences.

I did both. One local station still had a attendant out there pumping the gas, he would start it, I would usually finish since I didn't want to sit and wait for him to get through the other cars. Another station the attendants were no where to be found and I just pumped it, no big deal. The only time I really wish we could really is when I am sitting there watching the attendant slowly go from one car to another, knowing I could have half a tank already by the time they make it to my car. Oh well first world problems.

I prefer to pump my own. Having to sit an wait for the attendant drives me nuts. I own a diesel and I pump my own 95% of the time, it's just easier and faster.

My wife had to get gas and panicked when she had to pump her own. She had never had to pump her own gas before. With a quick call, I walked her through the process and she was good.

I usually pump my own diesel and gas in my boat tank as well.
I have never allow an attendant to pump gas in my Motorcycle.
My first trip to Oregon years back, I was astounded when an attendant told me I wasn't allowed to pump. Needless to say, we had a short, pointed discussion about who was getting near my HD with the fuel nozzle. we compromised with him handing me the nozzle and hanging it up after I filled my tank.
Being from CA I've been pumping my own fuel since long before most of these island monkeys have been born.

How many thousands of employees were laid off from gas’s stations? Looks like the unemployment number will be coming down.

Actually - none. Asking for and getting permission to allow self-serve required stations to have an attendant available to provide instructions and assistance.

Too late:
Quote:
The state fielded nearly 16,000 new jobless claims, according to new state data out Thursday. That brings the total number of benefits applications during the coronavirus outbreak to nearly 412,000 – more than 1 in 5 Oregon workers altogether.

I used to work for a company that had cardlock. In order to fill company vehicles I had to take a class and pass a test so the fire marshal would give me a card. Strange state we've got here. Outside of Eugene there is a little station with a sign on the diesel pump that says "We don't pump diesel for you, Self-serve only'. Yeah, we can pump diesel but not gas--like I said, strange state we've got here.

Perhaps the word “state” should be exchanged with “citizens”

I don't feel obligated to make jobs for something folks do for themselves in every other state. Not only can I do it myself, I typically do it better: I don't top it off, I do it quicker, and I wash my windows.

How about we drop the Min Wage to align better with other states, so small business owners like myself can afford to hire more hourly workers?

let them have two prices one for self serve and one for full serve. see how many go for the full serve and pay about 5 bucks more each fill up as thats about what it adds. other places that have full serve charge about 10 to 15 cents more a gallon.

Well, until July they make over twice as much on their couch watching cartoons. And any jobs that were 'taken' by the temporary order will all still be there after midnight tonight.

With that logic Washington gas should be lower than Oregon’s gas. As an adult I always made sure to fill up in Oregon before I went to Seattle. The last thing my dad would do when he picked me up for the summer was by hard alcohol and fill up.

So if self serve is cheaper, the prices sure haven’t reflected it the last 25+ years.
