Default Official Columbia River (& assorted tributary) Spring Chinook 2020 Reports

The Columbia River is 42.5F near Kalama and clearish green. There are sea gulls everywhere, hundreds on the logs North of the ramp and flying overhead. Smelt must be around with all of the activity.

I took my boat out for a brief shake-down cruise at dusk tonight. I saw at least half a dozen sea lions in the 30 minutes I was out there. A lone beaver crossed the mainstem to Sandy Island, West of the Port of Kalama. There is good downstream current mid incoming tide and likely through entire incoming. Despite beautiful calm mirror-like water and no wind, I was too busy or maybe forgetful to take a single picture.

I’ll be out in the morning with a lure in the shallow, slow water, working the old magic with a yellow, magic wand.

Good luck everybody.

Is the cr open for springers?. I always have trouble finding the most up to date regulations. What is the best site or app to obtain current regulations?

Yes, under permanent regulations 2 clipped Chinook/day through 2/29 from (I think) I-5 downstream. From 3/1 the limit drops to 1/day and the river is open from Warrior Rock just above Lewis River upstream to a big rock downstream of Bonneville Dam. You’ll need to check regulations for the area you plan to fish. The WDFW app “Fish Washington” is pretty easy to use.

Fished the Goble area yesterday and visibility was OK. Could see my prop. One other boat in the immediate vicinity but neither of us had any action. Entertained all morning by gulls diving for smelt right behind the boat. Many times the gulls would dive (like Terns), completely submerge and come up with a smelt.

Steady sideways rain pelting, flag popping . Considered bringing rain gear. Glad I didn’t. A top and heater, float coat and fleece clothing and beanie is plenty, and more comfortable in the cabin. Water color is good. Whitecaps. I can’t understand why I’m the only boat out here on this glorious Saturday.

Last night after I went in an open red plastic Coleman canoe solo camper arrived then pitched his little tent on the island. I saw him today at dawn. He spent an hour or two trying to paddle upstream towards me, never getting closer than 500 yds, then faded off, tired. I’ll check on his camp/him when I head in later.

Thanks for your timely reports. Checking on the camper/canoes is what thoughtful fishermen do. You are a good man CW. A number of years ago two young campers on Sand Island lost their lives when the sand above them slid and covered them while sleeping. Too bad there wasn’t someone like you that would notice the hazard and warn them not to pitch a tent where they are at risk of the sand sliding.

Fished from 7 to 11 on CR around Woodland area today. There were 4-5 boats around that we could see. Nothing for 2 rods. Weather wasn't ideal but good to get out there again. Will be back next week...

My 1st Springer of the year YA Baby!!!
Put in at Willow Grove at 7AM and had this one in the boat about 9:30. Weather sucked. It rained 1 minute then sun the next. We had terrible fog come and go till about 11:00 then it cleared up for a couple hours then about 1 it started blowing to much for my little 16 foot boat and we pulled anchor and came home. Got the fish on sardine wrapped Psycho Clown in 16 feet of water. Pulled a bonehead move and left the net at home. Drifted a mile down river playing the fish till it was no fight left in it and my buddy tailed it and threw it in the boat all in 1 motion LOL

Darn it! I was hoping it would wait a week before it started fishing.

For anyone that wants to fish the longview area it's a great tide. If you start at daybreak you can start with the last 2 hours of the incoming trolling and then right into the out going for the rest of the day on anchor dunking Kwicks.

Mud Report.
I know most river gauges on the lower Columbia do not record turbidity so most refer to river clarity in if they can see their prop, or use the Secci disk.
On the Willamette turbidity can make or break your day.
At any rate for once this mud is not from the valley, instead from the gorge.
I don't fish the Columbia often, and for those that do here is a lesson on Turbidity if you are not familiar. Take a look at this graph then go look at your river's condition.

Sorry..camera angle...first glance it looks like a willy fish ( aka sewer trout)😀 but after giving it a closer stare my vote goes to a upriver fish.

Went for a shakedown cruise today. At the mouth of the Lewis there was 40 to 50 sealions, 100's of seaguls and 30-40 bald & golden eagles. I've never seen anything like it. And I may be under calling it.

Does anyone know if the lewis has a smelt run? Saw some gulls and sealions with smelt sized fish in their mouths.

Just playing with you Doc I'm no eye doctor. Good call on the upriver fish.

Here is one of the Willy fish from last year.

Has the March 1st closure below Warrior Rock been set in stone yet?

Default Official Columbia River (& assorted tributary) Spring Chinook 2020 Reports

I’ve become pretty observant about that ever so faintly smoke-colored jaw on a brand new PLATINUM upriver Columbia springer, even when just hours outta the salt....

PRIME eaters, for sure!

So jealous, amazing fish and nice job!

Looks like a chunky snowbelly to me, but who cares. Any February springer is going to be your best tasting salmon all year.

Definitely a snow belly Willamette fish. You've seen 1, you've seen em all

Interesting. The fish in the boat pic looks quite different from the one on the cooler. On the cooler it does look more like an upriver, chunkier and more richly colored.

Does anyone know if the lewis has a smelt run? Saw some gulls and sealions with smelt sized fish in their mouths.

I think the Lewis, like the Sandy, gets a run when the smelt feel like going there.

Its hard to tell from Pics. Lighting plays a roll. It's easy to tell when you catch them. The pic in the boat is fresh and that looks like a URB. The pic on the cooler has a white background that could add to the washing out of the fish's color. Plugs knows what he's looking at when he catches it and if he says URB Then I have to agree.
