Default Happy birthday, Oregon

On this date in 1859 -- this native son will never forget.
Historical sidelight: President Buchanan, who signed the statehood bill, served as a private in the War of 1812 and is the only president with combat experience who was never an officer.

Interesting factoid about Pres. Buchanan.
I'm a native son too. 3 generations worth. But sure as heck don't remember 1859.
Now 1959, I remember very well. My pappy took us all up to Portland to the big centennial hoe down.
Got to see Roy Rogers and Dale Evans and the whole crew, up on stage.

Yes, today is the state's birthday. My daughter has been going on about it all week. Her 3rd grade class is doing a comparison of Oregon with Texas and she picked on the Valentine's Day birthday.

One of the precipitating factors of the Civil War.

Certainly a connection as Oregon was created as a segregated state. It banned slavery but also banned legal residence. It gradually eased restrictions until the constitution was finally amended in 1929.

Did George Gay also build the first all brick house west of the Rockies?
Somewhere between Dayton and Salem?
Maybe around the Hopewell area?
Pretty close to the Yamhill and Polk county line?
Sounds like the same guy.

FF, I saw Roy and Dale at the centennial expo as well. We may have been at the same show. I wore my capguns.
I am third gen, too. Grandmother born in Medford in 1889, Dad in Medford in 1925, I in Salem, 1953, daughter Ellie in Ashland in 1989.

My dads dad born near McMinnville, on Oldsville road in 1887. That house is still standing and occupied. Built in 1852. He died in 1987.
My dad and 7 siblings born on a ranch in Kings Valley. Dad born in 1922.
Meself and twin bro Bill, born in St Johns, in 52.
1 son and 2 daughters born in Salem in the 70's and 80's.
At least 4 out of a dozen g-kids born near Portland.
