Default Terrible event on Nestucca today.

I am curious if anyone knows about the incident on the Nestucca. As I get the story a person was lowering this boat at the launch and got his thumb wrapped in the rope. He severed his thumb completely off his hand!!. It was retrieved and someone rushed him to a hospital. That's all I heard.
Does any one have updated info? Was it able to be reattached?

Rusty

He was probably rushing due to the crowds. That fishery sounds a little crowded now a days. I do miss it though a lot. Lov that river.

It might be a wives tale, but if no ice available it’s best to put the finger/thumb in your mouth to keep it moist. Or is that just a knocked out tooth?

Not a wives tail. Lots of witnesses. Someone will soon add more details.

Your just reverting back to your childhood thinking about that thumb and the pleasure it brought sucking on it.

I heard from a couple boaters that it did happen, don't know who or any details, but the river was a zoo yesterday with the water getting back down into shape. had to be 75 boats on the river. I heard that Hebo shuttled over 50 rigs yesterday. OMG,

The last time I fished that river was 3 years ago and remember thinking I would never do it again added that to the Wilson. Sadly the internet and social media are intensifying the pressure on the old guard. It is so ironic that the Willamette river now offers a respite from the pressure .

Probably work too if you fall victim to Lorena Bobbitt.

Now that my kids are a little older and not so demanding I was thinking about getting the boat out and getting back to fishing. But with 50+ on the river might be time to give up winter steel.

About 20 years ago, after putting in way above 6th bridge, we came to the 6th bridge put in and found a guy in his boat who had just put in rowing his boat downstream with his hand wrapped in a bloody rag. He said his thumb was ripped off when it caught in a rope while putting his boat in. Someone had already shuttled his rig downstream, so he was trying to get to it to put his boat on the trailer and get some help. It is unfortunate to see the same incident repeated 20 years later.

Not sure what happened today, but we passed a boat that was submerged upside down on the Nestucca this afternoon. Heard everyone was ok but does anyone know what happened? It was below 1 and farmers creek area.

The information that was relayed to me was that as he was sliding the boat down it started going too fast and he reached out to grab the winch handle and realized the boat stopped he looked at the winch and his thumb was tore off in the gears. He lost his thumb to the first knuckle.

I lost my thumb in a similar manner while commercial fishing. It happened so fast, I never knew it happened. I didn’t even feel it, until about a minute or two later. Then it hurt so bad I almost passed out.
