Default Bag news for me today

Ok, I just assumed the end of the plastic bags and paper replacements at 5-cents each was to cover the stores cost. Well just for giggles I asked does these really cost 5-cents each a bag or is this the store markup included. Wait I must have asked a sensitive question as the manager was called up to answer this. What he told me blew my socks off. He said the store buys the bags but the 5-cents being collected goes to the state. I didn't know the state of Oregon added a new tax on the consumer. Now I know for sure we will be dragging in bags. So if the state charges 5-cents per bag maybe we should have a return of 5-cents for every bag we recycle back to the store same as the bottle bill. Call it save a tree recycle.

I can't seem to keep up with these taxes anymore. Good thing they can't tax raindrops, dang I shouldn't have said anything.

Since you are questioning this, it proves to us that you need to spend some time being re-educated. To the gulag you go.

We always have a bunch of those big cloth bags in the trunk. Some of them insulated.
But almost ALWAYS forget them till we're at the checkout.

I like to reuse the paper bags for daily composting. They are perfect ... Biodegradable, and used to be free. I noticed the bag collection was fetting pretty low. Might need to be a big spender and buy the bags from the state!

Unfortunately, I don't see hidden taxes like this stopping anytime soon. Just another gentle reminder from the state on how they would like us to live our lives.

That's what we do at costco now. Just jam it back in the cart, and stuff it all into the cloth bags when we get to the car.
That way, we kinda have it sorted for when we get home.
This bag goes to the freezer, that one for the reefer.
It works pretty good that way.

I can’t find anything in HB2509 that states this true but maybe I missed it. In fact it says no revenue impact!

I did see that the stores have the option of not charging customers who are on the snap program for the bags. I guess they are not held to the same standards we are when it comes to recycling?

My wife bought them as Christmas presents. Pretty spendy. Something like $21 for a 3-pack.

Some stores give you 5cent credit for each of your own bags used.

Last time I just grabbed one of the plastic baskets and took it to the truck. They didnt say how much it cost...so I guess they are free?? I don’t really want a stockpile of plastic baskets laying around and for the life of me can’t figure how they think they are better to toss out that a brown paper bag.

Y'all can breath now. From the Oregon.gov website....

“Businesses keep the fee, which allows them to recover costs in providing reusable bags.”

So, can I still buy a heeyuuuge pack of bags at Cash & Carry?

Do Quickie-Marts still get to put my 6-pack of C-Minus in a small black bag?

This just hurts the store because of a state, county or city law.

Maybe 3-4 years ago I bought a full carton of 1/6 bbl paper bags to use for recycling. I thought they would last me the rest of my life, since I've barely made a dent in them. Now I'll probably use them up.
And I've probably thrown out a dozen cloth gift-type bags over the last few years. Figures.
Maybe I'll take a couple five gallon buckets with me next time I grocery shop.

My wife used to work for Costco and taught me that trick. I wasn't aware that Costco even had bags, it's always been boxes for me.

I've got quite a stash of plastic bags I've saved off and on over the years, for re-purposing.
It's great walking out of BiMart with my purchases in one of their plastic bags. Some of the looks I get are priceless.

And the nice thing is, they're easy to wad up and carry in your back pocket until you get to the checkout.

Walking out of Bi-mart with canned food warehouse bags.
Always messin' with peoples minds.

How many people saw you come out and stopped to make sure which store they were at?

Been trying it out. At cash and carry this evening we just carted it out and loaded in the big cooler I usually have in back. Other stuff like the 4 gallon mayonnaise case sat fine on its own... Jk but I really shouldn't shop in that place.

At Freddy's last week I just go into the store at the produce entrance, grab a bunch of produce bags, and use those at checkout to put my groceries in. Works great.

Plenty of plastic bags still in stores. The law doesn't apply to the deli nor the produce sections. Need a bag, the produce section usually has them with handles.

Always looking for ways to simplify my life. Been doing Costco's and Schwan's grocery delivery for about two years now. On line shopping, no check outs, no lines, no bags, no travel or shopping time, no fuel costs or parking issues. Free delivery for orders over 75.00. Boxes of non perishable goods delivered to front door.

Schwans delivers the frozen products. Same deal, free delivery over 75.00. But Schwans people will load groceries in freezer for you.

If you knew me you would know that I was joking. I’m not a thief. I do however just take a cart or basket to the truck then unload. My wife has to deal with it more than me. I see more online shopping in our future.

Do the research,....

The year prior to California’s ban and 10 cent tax...they used 24 billion bags, after the ban they went thru 21 billion bags.

The 10 cent tax amounted to 2.1 billion dollars and went into the State treasury....

Is it about the earth or the revenue???.

It’s stupid....

Went to Walmart and they have some pretty nice larger grocery bags that are recyclable that they sell you for 5 or 10 cents. I've got about 10 of em in my car now. They are much more durable than the old plastic bags, so that is nice. I plan on re-using them.

They also appear to be much thicker, and assumedly, they might take longer to deteriorate than those thin bags, so if people don't reuse them and toss them, that could be worse for the environment.

They also say that they are recyclable, but I don't think the garbage companies will accept them in the recycle bins.

I'm on board to re-use these things, mostly out of guilt that I don't want even more waste if I have to buy more next time.

I think Costco does it right. They have tons of cardboard boxes that need to be recycled anyway. Everyone can recycle or burn the boxes at their homes. Not sure why more stores don't have this option.

A little off subject but remember those Sears and Wards monster catalogs that used to come in the mail? Well Dad saved everyone of them and stacked them three deep in a cardboard box using them for bullet stoppers. He liked to dig out the bullets to evaluate penetration and impact shape. Mom was always telling him to quit saving box loads of these in the basement. But Dad was always trying out new loads. He taught hand loading for awhile and was totally into it.

After reading some of these posts I started thinking that perhaps I need a small covered trailer for shopping. I'll just let the checker put my items back into the cart, then wheel the cart out to my trailer secure it with a bungee and drive home. At home I just wheel the cart in. Total zero need for bags or packaging- bag-less shopping.

It's not the nickle, it's the principle, and probably (hopefully) most of the whining is tongue in cheek...Some of the complainers probably put their 10 cent pop cans in the recycle...

My wife saved cans and bottles for six months waiting for the refund to go from 5 cents to 10 cents. Acted like she hit the jackpot when she took them in.

The marketplace did just fine with the standard of providing customers with a bag to carry their purchases home. It was the standard for a century or more. Then the gov, in its desire to engineer new methods of societal behavior, decided stores could no longer do so. Not only that, but were forced to punish their customers by charging a fee for a bag. Meanwhile a recent poll showed the majority of the US public is opposed to such nuisance laws.

CK... Yea, when walking the dog around the neighborhood on garbage day and all the stuff is sitting on the curb, the amount of returnables in the recycle makes a person wonder. No cure for lazy.

I put my 10-cent recycle pop/beer cans in a plastic bag out by the curb on evening before garbage pickup day. 90% of the time they are gone before garbage pickup the next morning. Usually by a car with Oregon plates. Washington doesn't have a deposit on cans/bottles. Doing my small part to help the Oregon recycle program.

Reminds me... There was a guy from WA who was returning lots of WA bottles at the return center on Beaverton-Hillsdale Hwy. They hired a security person to watch for him and it was successful. I think there's a full time security person now and will turn away anyone driving a car with WA plates.

Sounds like a pending law suit to me. We buy a lot of deposit required items it Costco. How about the homeless can picker upper folks? Yesterday while at Costco a drifter was head deep into the trash next to the recycle machine when several Costco staff told him nothing comes out of the trash and went ahead and escorted him out.

Something that I internalized as part of this change, perhaps others here will find useful in their own lives: it's not about you.

I'm diligent about recycling my bags using the handy containers that several of the local grocery stores have around. In my lifetime, I've released into the wild maybe four or five plastic bags that just got away from me somehow. I was rather annoyed at the change since I'll lose out on the free plastic bags that I'd use for various things.

But this change isn't about me. It's about all of the irresponsible folks who can't manage to keep hands on their bags or, worse, just toss them out into the wind. They're in the trees, the fences, they're stuck in the sand on beaches along the oceans and rivers.

Since paper sacks also require energy to produce and ship, the "bag tax" is there to encourage folks to bring their own bags, which really isn't that hard to do.

I've forgotten my bags out in my vehicle a few times since then. Several times I've walked out to get get them. Once the weather was rather snotty and I opted to just pay the $.05 for a bag rather than make the trip; it was worth it for the convenience.

You can buy paper bags in bulk at Cash and Carry. Plastic bags with handles, too.

Find some camo shopping bags and you'll be proudly parading into your market of choice.
Even better, tactical shopping bags.
Mine has nice pictures of vegetables on it, since I got it at the co-op.

I read today that Washington law makers to get rid of more of their rainy day fund are proposing "Carbon Farming". That is according to the bill is to pay farmers a stipend for planting trees and upgrading their farm equipment to more efficient equipment. Maybe I can get a some money to upgrade my lawn tractor on this bill since I mow 4 acres +.

As a side note if Washington is proposing an 8 cent bag bill and Oregon has the 5 cent bag what about supplementing the homeless and others with a recycle of the same value for every bag turned in just like the bottle recycle.
