13 days till opener here in Washington, this year it's big mature blacktail or bust, so I will be probably still at it during late season in November, but my wife isn't so patient which is a good thing for the freezer, so it will be fun helping her fill a tag. My favorite time of year , already seeing rubs in my secret stand area earliest I have seen this activity in years.

I got my fix early this year. Not sure what I’m going to do in Nov now. Guess I’ll have to chase ducks.

Love this thread.i was just thinking of starting something like this. Not kills( although post them!) But more of sightings, behavior, time of day. More as informational for us that are crazy about blacktail. One of my favorite times of the year. Neighboor has two great bucks already hanging with does most nights. Different bucks than hung out this summer and early fall. One really cool monster fork!

Glad I am not alone with this obsession, going scouting again this week, I have 2 solid stand areas, but looking for couple more spots, I am hunting a new unit this year and am very very encouraged by what I have seen so far. I am really now looking for those areas they retreat to once they get pressured.

PNW: The big guys are tucked away in their retreat right now so they don’t get pressured. Actually, it’s just the natural social behavior of older dominate bucks. The ones packing serious head gear. Look for places with very little deer sign but still has everything a deer needs. For bedding during the day, they prefer some sort of cover behind them with a good view below them. As an example, the top of a timbered hillside covered with ferns. Go into the woods with the expectation of seeing one deer, not a bunch of them. Have real good field glasses so you can see an antler tip sticking up or a nose or an eye at 150 yards or more.

Not quite a buck but had an awesome time with my daughter the other night looking for bucks. The conversation had while sitting and looking for a buck is amazing. No distractions from the TV or Ipad. Just her and me. So cool.

Dog..that is great advice, that's exactly what I do this particular area I am in has a large doe population in the lower areas as well as smaller younger bucks, I am concentrating about 800-1000 feet in elevation climb , above the main population , I am finding very nice trail system to and from this area , i dont expect to see a big guy until end of October, my main goal right now is setting up good ambush areas for when they start checking up on the ladies. This tactic has served me well in the past.

PNW: You have a great plan. I’d be sitting one of those trails from about Oct. 23rd on no matter what the weather is. And, I’d be planted there all day.

My boys buck tonight, shot it freehand at 70 yards after he seen antlers, he was by himself when I heard the shot, I was shocked, I texted right away and he said “I dropped him in his tracks” I was so excited, when your kid gets one, just hard to explain! he’s telling me the story here, taking me to the deer, it was straight down, we got it done though.

Not much of a story and no photo but my brother was up at his girlfriends place (think it’s by Banks) last Thursday and got a nice older buck with his No.1 .38-55. Long shot, dropped like a sack of potatoes.

The wife and I went up on the hill for a drive the Monday after opening weekend.
Her dad had just passed away and she wanted to get away!!! She wanted to check out our new hunting area for when hunting got better later in the year.
We were there for maybe 1/2 hour. I spotted a three point running down through a clear cut at about 225 yards and after a warning shot...I put him down.
I was pretty excited as it was a good thing for moral.
My wife came running up to congratulate and when I told her where I shot my buck, there was a forked horn standing right where mine was laying.
She didn’t need a warning shot!
2 bucks and an evening to clear the mind and maybe a blessing from above!

I was fortunate enough to take this big fork on Sept 8th with my 9 year old by my side. It was the first time he was with me for a kill, he was very excited and so was I. Big healthy Fork had lots of fat on him, I'd put him at 3 maybe even 4 based on the size of his skull.

She didn’️t need a warning shot!
2 bucks and an evening to clear the mind and maybe a blessing from above!
Amazing how life can work out like that...Ebbs and flows. Congratulations to you and your wife. What a great moment to share. I am sure her father was there, blessing the moment.

What a buck Haslebacher! Looks like you snuck right up on him. Good work!

Thunk, way to go! And congratulations on the first of many, father-son successful hunts.

So blessed to get to add to this thread this year.

On Saturday morning my step dad and I sat a clear cut that he had seen 3 different bucks in the previous 2 weeks but they stayed out about 500 yards or so, so he wanted me to bring my .300 so we could more easily reach out and drop one. Well..... as it happens the deer weren't' at that spot on Saturday morning. We didn't see them anywhere for about 2 hours. As we sat and discussed out plan for the rest of the day we decided to make our back to the truck and move off to another area. As we were walking he says, "man bubba, i sure am sorry we didn't see those bucks, who knows maybe we'll get lucky and jump them out of their beds!" lol... wouldn't you know it..... next thing he says, "oh, crap, there they are!!!", about 250 yards directly below where we were sitting off a ledge so we never saw them. We both raise up our rifles and let em have it. Two nice bucks in the group. I found the "biggest" one i could see and dropped the hammer, double lunged and he went down! Unfortunately my step dad missed his twice. I have been hunting with him for about 15 years and this is the first time we have been together for a kill normally we are on different cuts and one of us gets something. It was so cool to experience this together. One of the best parts, the buck ran down hill and ended up 50 yards off the end of a spur road so we had minimal work to get him out. Thank God for those spur roads! Good luck out there everyone and enjoy the moments...

Not a kill but just a big city buck hanging around this morning. Hopefully it will amp everybody up for the last couple weekends of season. This guy was hanging out with 4 does.

I didn’t grow up hunting, or even fishing, but a couple buddies have helped me hone my archery skills in the last few years. I’ve turned a couple does into burger and pepperoni recently, but this is my first buck. Can’t wait for next September!
