Default Summer run

Looking like those crossing Bonnie have mostly done so, the passage just dropped off pretty good. OR, is it the end of the late spring run? Either way, the numbers sure are low. I sure hope it is just this year, I don't seem to be able to manage getting out to the coast(health).

Yep. The summer chinook run is ending. July is time for steelhead to start picking up in the Columbia River. Not too sure how many we'll see this year, but we haven't seen any 1,000 fish steelhead days over the dam yet. I'm about ready to get out there and start soaking some spin n glos and prawn tails. Heading down to the boat for some cleanup work today.

They downgraded the summer run to 34,100 last week.

A large percentage of PITs in early to mid June were summers, so if PITs mean anything, I think a lot of the early June fish that were counted as springs were summers. (OK news for summers, bad news for springs).

Two brighter spots in the nighttime- Jack counts are about double last year, and passage at Priest Rapids is holding up well. The big drop off appears to be in the late spring/summers headed up the Snake.

So as to the OP, the future looks a little brighter, but as for this summer, I agree with Wayout. Summer steel are available (on Monday, a popular lower river beach had only five rods deployed, but two fish were landed)

Exactly what I've been seeing as well... numbers are slightly better up the Columbia over last year while the snake is tanking.
Checked the counts over Rocky Reach and they're 2k higher than last year when we got a season.
Open the season already!
Solid rumors are starting to fly...

What are the rumors of why the counts are so low this year?

Primarily poor ocean conditions. Followed, in no particular order, by birds, seals, walleye, smallmouth bass, interception, gill nets, global warming, reduced hatchery plants, too many hatchery plants...ad infinitum....

How soon one forgets of the ample springer opportunity the lower river has been granted by the crown while its upriver subjects have been banished from such favorable terms.

Most of the Lower River was granted until February 28.

Ya, in the S h i t t i e s t river conditions and before any fish are even there.
Same thing every year.

But hey, I'm not shy to travel 150 miles to be able to fish where there is a season.
See y'all Tuesday.

I travel farther than 150mi to fish in the S*** water conditions of the lower river in the Spring. Lower guys still think they deserve all the action.

Yep. Opener sucked. We went 7 (4 adults and two habits) for 11 and had to release one wild.
Size seems bigger this year than last and back to the more normal average. PIT tags bear this out too (35% vs 55% of 4+ year old fish).
Fish on!
