You can only have two for the year. A "few more" would be nice but illegal.

I think there are only 230 fish left on the quota so I doubt it.

However a big round of applause needs to go to the managers of the estuary sturgeon fishery in 2019.

The dates advertised for retention were the dates the fishery was open for retention - great job!

I was curious about the status of the quota. Thanks. I couldn't find the info anywhere and was just getting set to ask here.

You have to wonder how they can be accurate with the numbers. Warrenton didn't have a checker for a few of the days, or had only one who couldn't keep up with the ramp and the docks.

The sampling rate for any fishery needs to be a statistically significant representative number - I believe the target rate for the estuary retention sturgeon fishery is 10% of anglers.

That would provide an adequately accurate figure for a healthy fishery but the sturgeon is a bit more critical. They said the 2:00 pm closure was to ensure an accurate count. I feel they should’ve been accurately counting.

I’m not thinking they should add more days or even hoping they do. The whole idea of a strictly monitored fishery is to make sure we are using science rather than guessing.

If they opened it up again, the ocean fish will have certainly moved in to some extent and for some reason, they don't want us touching those fish. With 230 fish remaining of the quota, it would take only a couple of hours to exceed that and they would have no control of the excess. Not that they need that level of control but they think they do and will use that as an excuse to keep it closed.
