Default Got Cormorant Guano?

I just read an article on KGW about how the unprecedented amount of Cormorants nesting on Astoria Meglar bridge is causing significant damage due to their highly acidic guano. It takes 12 years to fully repaint and clean the whole bridge, and with the new poo splatter, it needs to be recoated every 15 years. Due to them being federally protected, the options are limited in removing them from the structure.

I talked to Dept. of Agriculture fellow who is in charge of the Cormorant reduction program about this problem. The Dept. works as a private contractor and if the city or ODOT wants the problem addressed, they'll have to hire Dept. of Ag.

Or run a Rush "Gasbag" Limbaugh tape loop 24-7. They'll all die of high blood pressure.

Bill, that wouldn't work either. They would first resort to opioid addiction and go deaf.

Just introduce some Perigrin falcons. I'm sure ODF&W or USFWS could round up a few dozen.

It has always had some birds on it, but last fall it really started loading up. Anyone who trolled under the bridge could see it. And feel it.
As said in the article, partly due to the hazing and culling from the dredge spoil islands but also because they finally finished painting and moved all the equipment out.
We just need someone to get up on the old wood gangway under the suspension section of the bridge and haze them.
Any volunteers?
I'm surprised no budding youtubers have discovered that old rotten walkway, it's even more frightening than the old train bridge over the Skokomish!

Thank the Corps of Engineers, ODFW, and WDFW, together with simplistic thinking. Hazing the birds off Sand Island sent them further upriver. Where they will now have an even greater impact on salmon.

Oregon: Federal Plan to Save Salmon by Killing Birds Backfired
February 5, 2019 KARINA BROWN FacebookTwitterEmail
ASTORIA, Ore. (CN) – The federal government killed thousands of double-crested cormorants in Oregon between 2015 and 2017, and may have caused the collapse of the birds’ largest breeding colony in a bungled effort to help young salmon make it to the ocean alive. Meanwhile, state biologists say the birds just moved upriver – where each eat three times as much salmon.

I'm pretty sure that the powers that be looked into a season on them (at least one subspecies) at one point.

I know eating one sounds nasty, but Otto's could make them into DELICIOUS sausage!!!! YES, Otto's is that GOOD!

Yeah, the poo smell is nasty when fishing near the bridge, but it's the flies that drive me bonkers. Seems like anywhere within a mile of the bridge and the flies are all over me. And as you get close to the bridge, especially on the Oregon side, the flies are so thick that you can't even see your skin - it just turns black with hundreds of flies. Nasty, nasty, nasty...

Ya gotta check wind direction before fishing the bridge. The stench is bad enough to gag a maggot.

I would imagine they taste like fishy chicken or duck.

Wonder how good or bad the guano might be for the gardens?

guano is what financed the Forest Heights housing development in Portlands' west hills. The nation of Nauru exports it for fertilizer and other uses. Same stuff as Astoria has as far as I know, just more of it.

I believe the name on the Forest Heights documents was Nauru Phosphate.
