Exclamation Steam-UP For KIDS 5/18/19

Powerland is having a special Saturday event for kids on May 18th. Demos, Trolly and Train Rides and MORE. If you enjoy the Great Steam-Up events in August, you'll love this special day for kids when the temps are easier to handle. See you there.

Forgot. Kids 12 and under are free. General admission is just $5 and parking is free.

Nice, Don! We were just talking today about the stream up that's coming up, and also about how it's hot during that time. I think we will check this early one out! Sure the boy will enjoy.it.

Where is Powerland?
Isn't it around Woodburn or Aurora?
Wifey's 10 g-kids would love it!
Majority of them under 12 y/o.

I-5 Exit 263 at Brooks, then head west. Powerland is on your right. Easy-peasy. If you've never been it will blow you away if you like seeing old cars, trucks, motorcycles, farm equipment, etc. There are 14 museums and groups presenting a bit of history. They have a mini-railway and give rides for a small donation. Nice long ride, too, through a nice landscape with ponds and bridges. They have an old double decker trolly car like they use down in 'Frisco.

The thing that most blew my mind was the fully functioning steam sawmill. Ripping big logs on a feeder through a big buzzsaw. The chain and feeders all run off a belt spun up by a steam engine. Over in one of the museums they have old chain drive log trucks.

Better stop, I'm getting excited about going. Sure hope the weather cooperates. But it's the best entertainment you can get for five bucks.

WOW! Thanks Don.
I've seen 2 of the few remaining steam sawmills here in Orygun.
Think the one by Hagg lake is still steam?
And another near Bellfountain.
Those old chain driven log trucks are cool stuff too.
Sounds fun. I'll alert the wifeys g-kids.
Maybe it'll keep them from raiding our larder for a day.

At this point it's an open date so I'm planning on taking the young'un. It would be fun to hook up and tour together if you can make it. Bring that Whetholer feller and the three rednecks will have a ball.

Can't plan that far ahead around here. But that would be great.
Do they have a beer garden?

It's a pretty cool place. I don't know if kids like it nearly as much as the old guy crowd. It really is something everyone should see at least once. There is almost too much to see in a single day.

One of my daughter's favorites is that English tractor that uses a shotgun shell and a hammer for a starter. This is NOT from the Steamup, but shows how it starts. At the Steamup the owner usually gets a kid to do the whacking.

I might have a display out there showing how important the stationary engine was on the farm and how ice cream makers have evolved over the past 100 years. I'm still trying to find a sitter for my kids, so I can go play. BigRedApe on here will be showing his Nichols and Shepard steam traction engine. This isn't going to be like the regular Steam Up. There are supposed to be more hands on exhibits.

There regular Steam Up is July 27 and 28 and August 3 and 4. I'll be there showing off a few of my engines.

And yes it is dry country. It's one of the requirements, that allow members of the Early Day Gas Engine and Tractor Association (which most of the exhibitors are) to have insurance at the show.

Well, as long as they will have corn dogs. I had one at Ag-Gest last weekend labeled Pronto Pup that wasn't all that good. But that's where I meet and talked with a couple there with a model streetcar for kids to get in for having their picture taken. They gave me flyer and filled me in on Kid's Day event. Said they weren't sure if the steam driven ice cream machine would be at the Steam Up this summer. Apparently the owners have been tied up with work and can't get away. They'd let someone else run it but they would have to be knowledgeable on how to do it. It sure is a hit with the kids, no matter how old they are.

Hey Don. What make was the tractor your daughter liked? Cool video.
My dads was and old English Fordson. What a monster.
It used a hand crank on the front to start it. Dad wouldn't let us kids try it.
He said it would break our arms. I believed it! It kicked him back a couple times.
Something about the timing not quite set right. Kinda like the old Harley's.

You can probably find one just like it out there in the summer Steam Up. Fordson, that is. They have a lot of early diesel equipment out there, one is a twin cylinder power plant with jugs so big you could put a pony inside. Maybe that's where the horsepower comes from? You can feel the ground shake when it fires. It must run about 3 RPM.

Me too. Going as a spectator this year with my 3 littles.

I'm more excited for the grown up Steam Up. Trying to get an engine running good to belt to a silage chopper from the early 1900's.

Probably get there mid-morning: 10:30 give or take an hour. If a shower hits that's a good time to duck inside one of the numerous museums. But a drop or two won't kill anyone.

Hey gang, have a great day at Powerland for your old buddy Bill, now so far away in the desert. I miss that place. Closest thing to it is Pottsville, also in good old Oregon.

Thanks Bill. Gonna be kinda wet on Saturday, but I'm a pure bred Orygunian, and have webbed feet. So no biggy.
Wish you could make it too. Be nice to finally meet up and intro ourselves.
Think a few of the other red necks will be there too. Might turn out to be a dern nice day. I'll try n take few pix, but still don't know how to post em on here. Too lazy to learn, I guess.
Where is Pottsville, and what do they offer to the general public?

FF, Pottsville in just a few miles north of Grants Pass, and just off I-5 at the Hugo exit at the bottom of Sexton Summit. Their big tractor show is June 15-16, Fathers Day weekend.
http://www.pottsvilleoregon.com/

My favorite part is when they fire up the huge Fairbanks Morse diesel submarine engine. Tip: stand upwind!

They have one about that size in one of the museums. Shakes the ground when it fires but it's not a high revving engine, maybe 5 RPM (guessing). The exhaust pipe sticks out the end of the building and must be 12" or better.

Can't believe that monster music machine was in a submarine.
And it DOES have a good beat. Up wind for sure.
Seen that before somewhere. Those pipes sound cool.
Thanks for the Pottsville tip Bill. Don't know when I'll get down in that direction though.
Just don't ever know.

Thanks Don. Those vintage motorcycles are something I wanna check out while there.
I might recognize a few of the cars.
I used to work for a lady in this area, that owned a whole bunch of antiques.
She even had a one of a kind electric car, made right here in southern Orygun. If I remember correct.
She had me wipe them down once a week with a chamois cloth and water. NO soap.
The Rolls Royce Silver Cloud was beautimus. All hand made. Think it was about a 50's model.
She has long since passed, but I don't remember where all the cars went.

About 15 years ago, I knew where the was a 1953 Silver Cloud in Salem. I still remember the general area but have forgotten which house. Wonder if it was the same one.

Not sure Bill. But I bet it won't fit in my old Ford 3/4 ton.

Would be cool to find out the original owners names.
Would be mind boggling to find out if it was my old neighbor!

Keizer Iris parade is also going on at the same time so plan your route accordingly.

Hey Don G B.
Are pictures ok to take of the antiquities and such?
Not sure, because some people are a bit picky about that kinda stuff.
Didn't notice anything on their site about it. So spose it would be ok.
Won't be able to post em on here, but can maybe e-mail em to someone that knows how to?

Best way is I-5 to the Brooks exit (263) then west over the top. Powerland will be on your right a half mile or so.

I was asked to exhibit but unfortunately I will not be exhibiting. I will be out there as a spectator with my own kids. This is my chance to show them around and have fun with them.
During the regular Steam Up in July/August I will have my stuff out. When that's going on I'm tied to the exhibit tending engines and don't get a chance to look at stuff with the kids

Thanks Don.
Figured that would be the fastest way. Didn't want to go out through Silverton, then back to I-5 to avoid Keizer traffic.

Just rolled my carcass out and the old woman is burning something to eat. Should be there before noon if her car will start.

Looks like the RXR goes 3/4 of the way around it.

Pull of the road and there's a long drive to the park entrance. That big field is for parking and in the summer it is full. If there's many cars they will have the trailer running to shuttle people from the lot to the entrance and back.

The mini-trains have a section of the park with several routes intertwined that's a kick to ride. The tracks around the park are for the old trolly and the maintenance jitney.

The Cat Museum is one of the buildings. There are a number of museum buildings for different manufactures or industries. You should get a map when you pay your $5 at the gate. If memory serves the Cat Museum is kinda in the middle of them.

I don't see smoke coming from the kitchen so breakfast ain't done yet. I may be a little late.
