Default Coho in January on the Clackamas??

Folks,

I was just browsing the PGE/Clackmas fish counts at Faraday and saw that there was some coho counted at the end of January.

Really weird, but thought all the coho would have spawned and died by now. Is there a C run or something that comes in January?

-Jeb

I have seen dark coho, not alot, but some, on a few north west coast rivers in late December years ago. I don't get very high up on rivers very often anymore so I can't say much about current run and timing but I think it's still possible to have coho around as late as Jan.

There is a remnant native siver run on the Clackamas River, that returns in Jan.

I caught one on the lower Nehalem years ago in the first week of January. Caught it on a plug behind the old Forest Service building (not there any more) about a 1/2 mile below the CC Bridge.

Coho spawn well into febuary in the NW... In AK there are only two months of the year that adult coho have not been found in the Kenai R.... April and May!!! If this helps your perspective.

I've seen coho way up CC also. Very dark and not worth bothering. Nice to just sit there and watch 'em.
I remember the Forest Service station way back when it was still manned.

Saw one on the Sandy two days ago. Not too dark but had a white line of rot running from the back of the head to the tip of the tail along the back.

PGE bio's on the have seen coho spawning into March on the uppper Clackamas. The run of those late, wild coho used to be in the mid 3,000's for numbers but I think it's down in around 1500 now.

I've caught coho as late as Christmas Eve down low on the Clack and up to the middle of January on the coast.

I catch native silvers every year in the Portland area up until about the middle of January. My son caught one 2 years ago that we estimated at 24 - 25 lbs.

I think the majority of the run Dave Johnson is talking about spawns in the Collowash River in early spring.

Clackamas use to have a strong late wild run of Coho that were headed for Fish Creek above North Fork Dam. Have had (in years past) some great catching around Christmas for these BIG Coho.

Didn't the people at the dam trap a world record sized coho about 4 years ago??? It was during the huge coho run the clackamas/eagle creek got?

There is another factor that I have not seen mentioned. I did some surveys with odfw and the forest service in the early 90's up there and we studied the NATIVE COHO. It is the only river in the willamette basin with a truely NATIVE COHO run. They are still native because they return in Dec. and Jan. no hatchery fish to mingle with. They are very valuable fish and the upper clack is being largely managed to support these fish. They spawn at about the same time as the (all non-native) summer steelhead did. This is just one of the factors that have lead to the management of the upper clack. Most of these coho spawn in fish creek which is why they closed it to fishing all together.
My 2 cents....

Thanks for the info Flyin chrome

I remeber seeing a picture in the oregonian of the monster buck coho they got in the trap a few years back. Mean looking, massive, nightmare inducing, hook-jawed beast!

I found a spawned out hen Coho at the confluence of the Kenai and Russian rivers the first week of May in the early 90s. It still had clear eyes and red gills, so it had not been dead long.

One of my fishing buddies last may caught a chrome coho trout fishing in may on the middle Kenai. My guess it is like oregon winter chinook and it wouldn't have turned colors, but spawned in chrome color.

It is when you consider the Cowlitz and the Clackamas are the only two rivers that empty into the Columbia River that have them and that the Clackamas run is small in numbers of returning salmon.

Three or four years ago there was a good number of these late run Clackamas River Coho that returned. While fishing for winter steelhead in January, in less than 90 minutes I had released three of these late coho that where very aggressive biters for what ever reason. These were not boots by any means and were returned from where they came unharmed. I doubt that will ever happen again but I sure hope these unique salmon have better days ahead.

Believe it or not I've heard that there is even a small group of summer chums that enter the Columbia and are found in the Cowlitz. Let it rip boys but before you do be sure to check with the chum bio at WDFW. I think one year they found 6 or so.

Pretty cool, I'd like to see one.

Fish do what the darn well please...

keep in mind wild fish return on a less timeley basis than wild fish, as was probably more prevalent before runs were totally decimated.

1336 on the run year. which amounts to the second largest return in 21 years. It's been an awesome late run coho return this year.

That's awesome!

About 20 years ago, I remember Terry M Or Bob T caught a nate Coho late in January that was 20+.

I fished the Clack end of November and went 4/4. 3 nate Coho and a nate Kelt. My super small sample size is in line with the "large" number of nate Coho.

Good to see the numbers increase.

I’ve caught a few bright native coho in late December swinging flies on the clack. Very aggressive takes, one busted my 7wt rod when it did the old play possum and then darted between my legs when I tried to tail him. 15lb plus fish for sure. I’ve known about the late native run and It’s cool to hear a little info about them.
