Default Anyone ever fall off their boat in the driveway?

I probably shouldn’t post this, but the muscle relaxer is making me not care...

I was washing the boat in the driveway today after a Newport crabbing trip (25 keepers, so life is good). While reaching around to get the motor I slipped off the swim platform. I blame the soapy water and Crocs, but the truth is I was never very graceful and am less so at 48 years old.

The four foot drop into gravel onto my left side left me with a bloody elbow, a messed up shoulder, very sore ribs, and a jammed big toe. I managed to haul myself into the house for some first aid from the wife and I don’t think I broke anything, although there are a couple ribs that may be cracked. I am just glad to not be in the hospital right now!

Anyone else done anything similar?

Crocs?! I beg you, tell me that stands for crocodile boots. LOLOL That was your biggest mistake coz crocs are just rubber, no support and loose fitting status footwear primarily marketed to kids.

Yeah, four feet onto concrete with a head bounce would have given you an ER trip. More of us have slipped off the trailer or boat than we admit. It's inevitable if you use your boat on a regular basis.

Get well, ice is your friend, then heat a week from now.

Hope you feel better soon. Answer is no I haven't fallen off my boat in my driveway or in anybody elses driveway...however when the 'spirit' was high in younger days..have fallen in mine and other ppl's driveways..several times...still didn't needed the boat . Hope you feel better and feel quadruple times good of whatever times pain you felt in your cleaning adventure

Yeah, it was too hot for boots and Crocs don’t leave marks everywhere like my other shoes. If it makes it any better they were camouflage Crocs with a Hello Kitty pin that my daughter gave me...

I lost my balance inside my boat in my driveway and fell backwards with all my weight and landed on the small of my back on the gunnel. Excruciating pain, plus I bruised a nerve and either bruised or fractured a rib or two. Two weeks later and most of the pain is gone but it’s gonna be at least another few weeks till the nerve pain and the ribs are healed. Should be good for the b10 opener!

I was installing the top in the shop and slipped off the gunnel and busted my a$$. I looked around to make sure no one was looking but didn't get that lucky. Both my boys saw it and come running over to make sure dad was alive.

Of course they yelled........."mom dad fell out of the boat!" She came running like she needed to cal 911! I faked like I was OK but my left leg felt like it was broken. I survived.

Dude - that hurts - sorry to hear it!

It is something I think about all the time now. 53 and not limber any longer.

I use a ladder to get up on my swim deck and so every time I go up and down I have the same conversation with myself.

Rest and medicate and needed..................

There are two kinds of boat owners.
Those that have and those that haven't yet..
Years ago jumped out of my old Glasspar and landed directly on a tennis ball. Sprained my ankle something terrible.

More recently this last weekend trying to get out of a dang Kayak! Face planted(not quite but close, scrapped up a little) on the boat ramp providing some entertainment for my lady friend and other users.

Yes and I was wearing a pair of well used Crocs also. They have since been retired and I have a pair of Classic All Terrain Crocs (improved traction). Fortunately I bounced off our utility trailer before I hit the ground. Limited damage, bruised pride but no lasting damage for this 60 year old...

Also have him look at your shoulder. I slipped on my moss covered driveway and tore the supra spinateus in my shoulder. 7 month recovery time. Anchor inserted in my shoulder. After the shock of the fall subsides, the injuries start to show themselves.

I badly dislocated my shoulder a few years ago. It took two doctors playing tug-o-war with me to get it back in. My wife watched the whole procedure and said it was almost funny. For her...

And to let you know I'm not perfect either my bonehead (you know better) move is hooking the boat up to the truck at the crack of dawn in . . flip flops. If I keep it up one day the jack is gonna run over my foot or pinch the side of my foot, or catch the toe nail and . . I asked for it.

Similar to busting one or both shins on the trailer hitch stinger.
Twin bro walked into his a while back and started to go down. He grabbed the tailgate as he twisted on his way down, and ended up with sore shins and a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder.

I ended up with four sutures in the back of my arm, but the bone is fine. Ribs are probably cracked, but I didn’t get a chest x-ray since they won’t treat it any differently than they would treat torn muscles.

All I can say is that it could have been much worse.

I have a unique "Boat Fall" story.

I was putting my boat on the trailer, and fell from the front of the boat onto the trailer tongue. I broke four ribs hitting so hard, and could barely breath. Some folks think this is horrible.

However, the CT scan later at the hospital showed some disturbing problems with swollen lymph-nodes. Follicular Lymphoma - stage four.

I have never been so grateful for falling off my boat. I also never remember the pain from the ribs.

I am now cancer free, and see my boat as my guardian angel.

And, by the way, I also installed a new step on the trailer tongue to prevent falling.

If you make a habit of doing these kinds of things, maybe change your handle to Dan Faller.

I haven't done such a thing as this, but I have had a tumble or 2 when the boat hits a rock and stops right now. One such incident involved me having to put my foot on my rowers block to cushion a friends fall that would have had him hit his lower spine on it. Lucky for him, I merely fractured a bone. Anything is possible. I once pulled a neck muscle by mashing buttons on RBI Baseball video game.

Hawgbuster, WOW. That is indeed a crazy story. A well timed accident, for sure! Glad it all worked out.

Sheriff was talking with my dad at the launch while I got the boat ready for the drive home. I didn't realize my dad had folded up the ladder on the offshore platform of my North River Seahawk. I fell backwards getting out of the boat and landed at their feet. Luckily I had a backpack full of clothes that broke my fall and kept my head from hitting the asphalt.

Didn't fall off the boat but had a tongue jack pin fail and the trailer and tongue jack scissor my leg. This was recent maybe 5 months ago.

I didn’t fall out of the boat in the driveway.
I’m to smart for that! So I did a pommel horse type dismount over the Fish On rod holder above the plastic step fenders on the trailer in my garage.
Oh yah, I was wearing socks? talk about a power slam to the balls of my feet. Hurt once, learn once.

Had a buddy jump off the bow, caught is foot on the anchor, twisted his ankle on the rocks, passed out briefly and ****** his pants, an awkward ride home.
Years ago I hopped up on the garage cabinets on my knees, then hopped back off backwards only to find one of the cabinet doors had swung open, quite a few stitches and one of the first visitors to the SW Washington Salmon Creek ER room. Almost lost an oyster.
Fast forward a decade I was back at the same hospital after encountering an ungrounded energized electric water heater that I couldn't let go of, same ER doc remembered me, he walked into the room, smiled at me and pointed at his groin.

Not at home but at the ramp. Just got the drift boat loaded on the trailer and pulled out of the water. I use the fender as a step to get in and out of the boat. On my way out I didn't hit the top of the fender, off to the side and my foot slides of as the other was clearing the gunnel. As my foot was going past the oar lock in my most graceful fall, the loop of my wader boot hooks on the oar lock. So now here I am on my back with one foot hanging from the oar lock. Had to have my buddy get my foot off the oar lock so I could get up off the ground. I'm just glad only me and my fishing partner saw it.

Haven’t fallen out of the Hewescraft yet, but I think about it each time I climb over the anchor onto the trailer spare tire after putting the boat back onto the trailer.
I did fall out of the driftboat and face plant right in front of Buzz R and a few others. Face didn’t hit bottom but it get really wet. My first thought was of the reel and then the rod. Told them the entertainment was free.

Yep, but by stepping down onto the top of fender and stepping back, forgetting there was one more step. Bruises. Falling off the camper was way worse. Feet tangled on the top step as I was backing down, landed on back, head whiplashed back and smacked the concrete. Neighbors happened to look out their front window and saw me out cold on my back. Luckily I came too before they were able to call an ambulance. Old people can't afford dumb moves.

I fell off the bow on to my tailgateless pickup while washing it in the driveway. I couldn’t stand up straight fo two weeks.

A prior boat became available to me when the owner took a fall off the boat and injured himself so seriously that he gave up boating. He was quite crippled when I met him to buy the boat. Sad...

Probably just a matter of time. I did slip on a slug walking down the stairs from our cedar deck on my way to go fishing at 4 am. woke half the neighbor hood up. this is the results.

I've read a lot of commiserating with the victim but our gathered knowledge surely can come up with all sorts of ways we could prevent this tragedy from affecting the yet uninjured. Would the author of this thread be too grumpy if we headed in the direction of prevention?

BTW.... Those were some NASTY X-Rays and metal ornaments. There will be heck to pay at TSA!!

I have some suggestions but I seek permission first or the beginnings of a new thread. What say you?

There ought to be a warning on this thread! Ouch!

BTW, anyone else notice the irony of the OP name and subject?

When I'm washing my boats or just getting in or out, I GO SLOW. I grab a rail with the grip of death. I look like a slow motion version of myself.

When I have gone over the bow of any of my last 3 motor boats, there is a GNARLY can anchor that looks like it might KILL ME. I have been very wary of a tine in the chest. Or eye. Or anywhere else....... I GO SLOW

While in the garage, I fear walking into the anchor can as it extends well in front of the bow. The swing away tongue brings the unaware walker into close proximity to the tines. Right about head level. I hang a red PFD on the tines to bring awareness to passers by.

as for TSA, my hip replacement in September will give me all kinds of fun passing though airports .........

OK. I can see an opening for a modicum of positivity here.

My lovely bride took a tumble getting into the boat which was tied up to the dock. In the stern I have what is affectionately called a "Gerzer Stick" to which my right hand is attached while I'm operating the tiller 115 pump with the left. In crooked rivers, rapids or offshore swells that support has always been really helpful.

After she took the fall I installed one in the bow that gives us all an excellent hand hold to negotiate the gap between dock and boat, to and fro. This has also proven very beneficial for getting in and out of the boat by providing a sturdy support allowing me to slowly easy myself to the ground and to reenter the boat from the ramp. The geezer stick is simply a crab davit base with a shorter riser that has a rubber grip handle slightly bent over like a cane hand grip. Don't need any broken hips, legs, ankles or ribs and at about the cost of two Benjamins it is well worth it.

On the other end, a nice five foot piece of 2X10 that acts as a bridge between the tailgate of the PU and the dock keeping my feet dry and allowing me access to sit on the tailgate and crank the boat onto the trailer.

Just some thoughts that help avoid contacting orthopedic surgeons.

Be Safe

I would love to here some ideas as to how to prevent this. I am looking for a good step to get into the boat from the bow while on the trailer, that is another way that I think I might hurt myself....
